chapter nineteen;
you're my everything

When James finally got to the house it was dark out. James knew his parents were out on some mission and Ninny must've been busy elsewhere because the kitchen lights were out. James walked through the back door, aware he was soaked from head to toe and froze in the doorway when he noticed Amaya standing in the dark kitchen, getting a glass of water.

His features softened. Fuck. She was a sight for sore eyes. Dressed in one of his sweaters, her hair falling down her shoulders and her face looked divine.

The moment she saw him, her eyes lit up though her face fell into a frown as she searched his face.

"What's wrong?" she asked. "You weren't supposed to be back until later."

James shrugged and forced a smile on his face as he walked closer to her. "Change of plans, I guess. What've you been up to?"

"James—"

"Can I have that?" he asked and without waiting for an answer, grabbed her glass and downed it in on go, making Amaya simultaneously scowl at him and frown in concern.

"Did something happen? You're acting weird."

"Weird?" He shrugged nonchalantly. He didn't know how to go about it. He needed to tell her he loved her. He needed to talk to Dumbledore about Peter. He needed to talk to Amaya. He just didn't know how. "I'm fine ."

She rolled her eyes at him. "Right. Well, if you don't want to talk to me, I'm going back to the library."

"I hit Peter."

Amaya stopped walking and turned to him, confused. "What?"

"I hit him." James shrugged helplessly, putting his hands into fists when they started trembling. He looked at the ground. "Again and again. I lost control... I was going to kill him, Maya."

When he met her eyes they didn't look afraid or repulsed. They looked worried. For him. She walked closer to him. "Did he do something? Did he hurt you?" she asked stepping in front of him, cupping his jaw as she tilted his head, looking for injuries.

James almost laughed. He shook his head, taking her hand in his. "He hurt you," James said in a whisper and Amaya froze. "He was the one that messed with the bludger, Maya. He tried to kill you."

Amaya didn't answer for a moment, staring at him, and at last, she nodded. "I know."

His brows furrowing, James looked at her in disbelief. "You knew? Why didn't you say anything?"
