chapter twenty-five;
all the time in the world

Amaya wasn't badly hurt by any curse. In fact, and much to James' relief, she wasn't hurt at all. Her body and mind had taken quite a toll, though, with the magic flying around from the battle. The reason the building collapsed on itself was because Amaya's magic collapsed. The wards she'd cast evaporated, she must've lost control, and with the blast of them, the foundation of the warehouse gave in.

Dumbledore explained it to him or tried to. He told James Amaya's magic was like water, it mixed with others, it adapted to new environments, and as long as it remained calm she could control it. The mix of different magics flying around during the battle, and the amount of magic gathering in her wards, in herself, created currents, big waves that she couldn't keep control of, that she wasn't used to.

And when she collapsed, any order the magic had flown out, and suddenly her magic turned into the ocean during a storm, unpredictable and dangerous and Amaya had nearly drowned in it.

Thankfully, she was alive. And well. She just hadn't awakened yet.

James walked into his room after Ninny forced him to go downstairs and eat something. He just didn't want to leave her side, was that so bad?

He sighed as he saw she hadn't moved yet from where he left her on the bed resting. He was thankful she was alive and breathing, but every second that passed that she didn't give him any sign of awareness the put in his stomach grew.

Sitting down on a chair beside her side of the bed, James leaned closer to her, brushing her hair behind her ear as she slept.

"You're a menace," he murmured, his lips tugging into a soft smile as he traced her features. She looked peaceful, beautiful as always. James would give anything to see her eyes again though, her dimples. "Just open your eyes, love. Please."

She didn't move. James' shoulders slumped and he took Amaya's hand in his, kissing the back of it.

"It's alright, Maya. You can rest, just make sure you come back to me."

He must've fallen asleep at some point because the next time he woke up he was sleeping on top of his arm, with a hell of a neck pain. He felt someone's hand land on his shoulder and looked up to find his mother looking at him with a gentle smile.

"You should sleep properly, darling," she told him as James sat up straight, looking outside to see the sun setting, and when he looked back at Amaya she still hadn't moved. "Her magic took a big toll, James, she just needs to rest."

"She hasn't moved, Mum."

Mum sighed and hugged him to her, making James slump against her, though his hand didn't leave Amaya's limp one.
