chapter twenty-three;
unpredictable magic

The test of Peter's loyalty started as planned. Dumbledore had chosen an abandoned warehouse in the middle of nowhere to ambush the little rat should he prove himself guilty. It seemed smart at first. The warehouse was huge and they could easily trap the rat while keeping wards up.

But Peter had taken it to his advantage too.

He met with the Prewett twins inside, as the rest of them stayed hidden behind boxes and charms, to make the 'drop off'. Dumbledore had summoned him a day early to explain to him his task of utmost importance, and how Peter would be in charge of carrying a weapon to another location, making it inconspicuous, as no one would expect him of all people to be in charge of something so big.

No one would've expected him to be a traitor either.

The second he took the box the twins gave him, five other figures appeared from the shadows—the anti-apparition ward wasn't yet in place, so Peter couldn't suspect anything, but that only gave them the advantage.

The moment the extra five Death Eaters arrived, Amaya, who'd been standing next to Lily and Marlene, gasped in pain. They all had the dark mark, she could feel it, the magic that had been previously in the air was suddenly poisoned by the dark magic they had, and while it was nothing compared to the Horcruxes the sudden burst was unexpected, it made Amaya recoil into herself.

Peter played the part for a second, acting scared as the Death Eaters circled him and the twins, but then he opened the box. And found nothing inside. Amaya, even from a distance could see the glint of panic in his eyes as he connected the dots, and in the next second, he too was pointing his wand at the twins.

"Where is it?" he asked loudly, his voice echoing through the walls. "Where's the weapon?"

At that moment, James, Sirius, and Remus came out of the darkness with their wands raised at the Death Eaters. "It doesn't exist, Peter," said Remus calmly, though Amaya was certain she could feel his rage as his wolf, his magic started to rumble.

There was so much magic, from all around her, Amaya felt it rushing through her veins, it was overwhelming. She couldn't help but not feel it, not call to it even. She'd been taught to control the magic around her, no matter how overwhelming, but usually, it was just one type of magic, and she wasn't using any of her own. At that moment she could feel everyone's, every different kind. It was exhilarating.

"You tricked me," said Peter, his voice hollow as he looked at his friends. He gave it all up then. "You don't understand, they lured me to their side, I was trying to protect my mother—"

One of the Death Eaters let out a cackle, throwing her mask to the side, and Amaya's mouth fell agape at the sight of the woman. She looked a lot like Sirius, only the mad glint in her eye was borderline clinical. Bellatrix Lestrange, Amaya assumed. She could only hope the mad witch didn't know about their little robbery in her vault.
