I remove my credit card from the card reader and slide it back into my wallet. Then my wallet goes in my purse.
I wait for my new friend to finish paying so we can find a spot to sit. "Let's go sit by the windows."
"Oh!" Kevin chimes. "Follow me, girl. I can see the perfect spot from here."
It's the same Kevin who sat at my table in my art class. From what he's told me he's a senior and graduating in a few months.
He's also gay.
He made that very clear when we walked from the art building to the other side of campus to get a little something to eat.
"When does your next class start?"
"Not for another two hours," I say as I remove the lid covering the dumplings. "It's a marketing class and then I'm done for the day. Then tomorrow I have a Spanish class and two business classes."
"What level is your Spanish class?"
"First," I whisper.
Kevin looks surprised. "So there's the possibility of you being in a class with freshmen?"
"Well, when you put it like that . . ." I trail off and eat a dumpling after dipping it into sauce. "I found out that my degree requires four foreign language classes. My advisor didn't say anything until I confronted her about it."
"Damn," Kevin mutters. "Are you not a junior?"
I nod. "I have a plan though."
"And that is . . . ?"
"One class this semester, one in the summer, one in the fall, and one next spring." I can also take one in the winter so I don't have to worry about it in the spring.
"I can't believe it took you that long to realize you were missing those requirements," he adds. "Everyone knows not to trust the advisors. You make your schedules on your own and take it to them to make sure it's okay."
