Chapter 5- Living

Two years later Hally was cooking dinner while Soledad worked on her homework, Norman sleeping soundly in her lap.

"So mom. What's your birthday?"

"October 31st 1500." Hally answered.

"We have to make this realistic mom."

"Okay. October 31st 1983. That makes me 25." Hally said as Soledad wrote down.

"When was Auntie Cat born?"

"October 31st till November 2 1600."

"Once again. Realistic."

"November 1 1988. That makes her 20."

"What about my dad?" Hally spat out her coffee when Soledad mentioned that.

"Um Soledad. I don't know who your dad is."

"Why?" Soledad asked making Hally sigh.

"Because you were adopted." Hally said quietly.

"Oh. Well I can just leave that blank."

"Wait aren't you mad I didn't tell you?" Soledad shook her head.

"I don't care. You're my mom, the end. Now what about Norman?"

"He was born.... August 13th 1873 but you can change that to 1986."

"Wait, you where born in the 1500's how old does that make you?"

"508." Hally answered putting Soledad's dinner on a plate.

"508? If you're that old, then what are you?" Hally walked over to Soledad and looked her dead in the eye.

"I'm Halloween."

"You're a holiday?" Soledad asked curiously.

"Yup. Weird huh?"

"No it's AWESOME! What was grandma and grandpa?"

"Your grandfather was All Saint's Day and your grandmother was All Souls' Day." Hally said going back to her cooking.

"And Auntie Cat?"

"She's the day of the dead."

"Because you're Halloween, does that mean you got super cool powers?"

"Besides the ones you know of?" Soledad nodded, grinning from ear to ear.

"Well when our bodies are badly damaged we retreat into a realm where we can regenerate."

"So you don't die?"

"Nope. Unless of course we don't want to regenerate then we don't have to. We also can adjust our appearance to mimic age but the changes are very slight."

"Really?" Soledad asked with wide eyes.

"Really. Our job is to make humans happy, our existence as holidays is to make people happy. To give them a break from regular life."

"You told me your job was to scare people." Soledad remembered.

"Part of it. Anymore questions?"

"What powers do you have?" Soledad asked making Hally chuckle as she placed Soledad's dinner in front of her.

"Well, I can talk to and summon the dead, teleport, transform into anything and hypnotize people."

"You can hypnotize people?" Soledad asked between mouthfuls of food.

"Yeah, I use it a lot less than my other powers."

"Maybe you can hypnotize my teacher to give me less homework." Soledad joked making Hally laugh.
