Not many knew about the Devil's Eyes. Only those core members of the organization were aware of its existence, and some nosy people who managed to get a wind of it. It was a program created by the most notorious and best hacker in the underground; it was his gift to Jane as a sign of his devotion, loyalty, and perhaps, his twisted love.
Joker often called it his child with Jane.
The only person who has access to this software was Jane. Although Jane showed it to Bear a few times, Bear never truly touched it for the reason he didn't want unnecessary problems with Joker. Still, he was familiar with it.
"Was it you?" Joker repeated, snapping Bear back from the current lapse. "What? What's with that ugly look on your face?"
Bear opened his mouth to deny it as his instinct told him someone probably got a hold of that system. However, just before he could deny anything, he remembered that scene a few nights ago.
That time Jennie broke her phone to smithereens.
No one ever truly got the answer for why Jennie did what she did. They could just make assumptions. After all, she argued with Lisa that day — according to Lucas. But was that enough reason for her to break her phone like that?
Joker let out a shallow breath, slapping Bear's firm grip on his collar. The latter instinctively let him go, watching Joker snap his tongue in irritation.
"From the face you're making, I guess it was, indeed, you. Or maybe Bobby, since you two were thick-faced." Joker tugged his jacket, glaring daggers at the old man. "Did you think I won't find out that you're sneaking into my system? And that I won't locate you? Oy, Bear, do you really take me lightly?"
Joker took a step forward, ignoring the influx of residents arriving in the lobby.
"I will let this slide for now, but remember this." He pressed a finger on Bear's sturdy chest. "That program is my son. And the only reason it still exists is because it's my only memory of her — something we had together. Don't ever use it to your own advantage. It's not made for you but for her."
When he retrieved his finger and stepped back, he added in a taunting tone. "You killed her, Bernard. Do not forget that. You. killed. Her. Don't think you deserve to hold any of her memoirs because you don't."
"Take this incident as a warning because the next time I find out you're using the devil's eyes again, I will burn you to the ground," he continued, resting the device over his shoulder, eyes fixed on Bear. "Don't test me."
Both men looked at each other bearing sharp eyes, neither backing down. After a beat, Joker turned on his heel lazily.
"Damn it. I wasted my time for nothing," Joker grumbled as he strutted away, tapping the device on his shoulder. "But well, it's been a while since I traveled to a foreign country. I should take this as a vacation."
As Joker walked away, blending into the panicking residents that were exiting the building, he noticed some familiar faces from the distance. He stopped, turning his head, only to catch a fatty bouncing for his life.
"Huh?" Joker tipped his sunglasses down to see the fatty clearer. "What is that pig... ahh... those four followed the old fool, huh? And they dare to lecture me about how I continued with my life."
Joker scoffed. "Hypocrites." He just snapped his tongue as he went along with the waves of people.
Meanwhile, Bear was frozen in his spot, unable to move. He slowly turned his head, watching Joker disappear from the crowd.
"What are the odds?" he whispered to himself, feeling his heart slow down for a bit. "That's impossible, right?"
His breathing slowed down as a crazy thought crossed his head. Could it be... Jennie was Jane?
That was impossible — nonsense!
This was no fantasy story. They lived in reality, where life and death were the beginning and end. However, no matter how Bear denied this ridiculous conclusion in his head, snippets of memories invaded his mind.
From the moment he met Jennie Kim, and then that incident with Andrea Ng. His brain recalled that look on her face when she confessed to orchestrating Andrea Ng's downfall, and how Jennie unhesitatingly stabbed herself just to make sure Andrea rot in jail. Things only escalated from there as Jennie displayed more similarities, habits, and ways of talking that resembled Jane's.
Even the injuries she left in those rogues were similar to how Jane would beat someone up. She would first cripple them, strike them in the area where it hurt the most without killing them, and then use the remaining of her time pondering whether she would let them live or die.
[I'm sure she is happy, Bear. More than she could ever fathom.]
Just then, Jennie's remarks a few hours ago rang in his head. His pupils slightly dilated as he instinctively held his breath until his neck turned taut. The look on her face while saying those and the certainty in her voice suddenly made all his hair across his body raise.
'Is that even possible?' he asked himself, staring at the entrance of the building. 'That she... is her? But how?'
It didn't make sense to him. Even if he would tell this to someone, it wouldn't make sense to others as well, for sure.
As Bear kept his eyes on the entrance, he caught Jennie outside the building. Despite the crowd exiting the building, she stood out because of her beauty. She had this worried and curious expression on her face, but then Jennie turned her head in a direction.
Her eyes briefly dilated in surprise, as if she saw a ghost. When Bear followed the direction she was staring at with his gaze, his eyes landed on Joker's back.
'No...' whispered Bear in his heart, unable to discern which emotion was dominant in his heart. 'That cannot be...'
He slowly shifted his eyes back to Jennie, only to catch her clicking her tongue in annoyance. "Somebody... tell me I'm going crazy and this is a sign of aging."
