I wake up to the warm glow of sunlight peeking through my curtains, signaling a new day. Stretching, I yawn, feeling the softness of my bed. My tranquility is short-lived.My phone buzzes, shrill and insistent. I glance at the screen, my heart sinking. Mom.
Again.
Every. Single. Day.
I let out a deep sigh, frustration simmering beneath the surface. Can't she just give me some space?
"Hello?" I answer, trying to sound cheerful.
"Kobiruo, my dear! How are you" Mom's bright voice fills the line.
"I'm fine Mummy" I force enthusiasm.
We launch into our daily routine: Mom inquiring about my day, my plans, my friends. The same questions, every time.
As I respond, my mind wanders. Why can't she trust me to handle my life? I'm not a child anymore.
"Ehen Mr Awolowo's son is in Canada, he told me that he texted you but he tells me you don't respond"
" That is because I am very busy"
" Ahh okay I understand, maybe when you come back during the holidays I can arrange something for both of you"
"Mummy, I have to go," I interrupt, gently but firmly.
"Okay, dear. Just wanted to check in"
" Goodbye"
I hang up, feeling guilty for my impatience. She means well.
But why does she need to call every day?and why is she trying to hard to make me get involved with Richard?
I toss my phone aside, swinging my legs over the bed. Time to shake off this frustration. After my bath.
I slip into my favorite skinny jeans, hugging my curves in all the right places. The dark wash complements my light skin tone.
Next, I choose a fitted tank top, its silky fabric skimming my body. The vibrant coral color makes my skin glow.
The tank top's scooped neckline accentuates my full bust, while the fitted silhouette highlights my waist and hips. I feel confident, feminine.
I admire my reflection. My curves are on full display.
To complete my look I add a delicate silver necklace with a tiny pendant.
Simple silver hoop earrings that complement the simplicity of my outfit.
A quick swipe of lip gloss and a spritz of fragrance finish my routine.Feeling polished, I head out the door.
I don't see Tejiri and I'm not even surprised cause most of her lectures are usually in the morning. As I walk across campus, I glance at the buildings, expecting to catch a glimpse of Tejiri. But I know better. Her classes are usually packed into the morning schedule.
No surprise, I don't see her.
My mind drifts to yesterday's encounter with River. His words still linger, a faint sting
"We aren't friends"
I shake my head, dismissing the memory. River's words did cut deep.
I focus on the present, enjoying the warm sun on my skin and the vibrant campus life.
As I stroll, I notice the lush greenery surrounding me and the students laughing, chatting, or studying under the shade.
The sound of leaves rustling in the gentle breeze.
The sweet scent of blooming flowers.
