IF THERE was anything weirder than sword-fighting with her older sister, it was sword-fighting with the queen. But Mevanya had to admit that part of her was actually enjoying herself.

Rhaenyra hadn't been playing when she asked for help. The woman really wanted to learn. So that was where they were now; Mevanya teaching her older sister everything Ser Harwin had taught her.

"You're coming along fast," she commented proudly, after finishing their training session.
"I don't know if you're lying to me because I'm your Queen or if you're telling me the truth," Rhaenyra laughed, catching her breath.

Mevanya laughed as well, reaching over to her sister to place a hand on her shoulder and smile at her with sincerity.

"I mean it," she said with a soft smile.

Rhaenyra smiled back, and sat down to take a well-deserved rest.

"If you don't mind, there is one other favour i'm afraid I have to ask, my dear."

Mevanya straightened her back, nodding no longer to her sister, but to her queen.

"Of course, anything."
"I received a letter from Lord Caswell expressing his concern. He claims to be too unprotected from a possible attack by the Greens. Of course, we have no reason to think that Criston Cole and his army are to attack Bitterbridge, but the man is paranoid. He wants me to assure him that he has our protection."

The woman rose from her seat with a sigh, and looked earnestly at the younger woman, but Mevanya could see the weariness in her eyes, the resignation to what she was about to ask of her. Rhaenyra didn't want to do it, Mevanya could see that, but as queen, she had no choice.

"I'll go, don't worry," smiled the princess to try to calm the Queen's nerves a little, without much success.
"It's just a visit, just for Lord Caswell to see Ilaxia and Venmor and stay at ease."
"Rhaenyra," Mevanya stopped her sister's nervous words, taking a step closer and taking the woman's hands with a sympathetic smile. "It's all right, it's not a long dragon ride, I'll go, calm Lord Caswell's nerves, and be back as soon as possible."

Rhaenyra nodded, trying to convince herself of Mevanya's words as well.

It would be fine, the Green army was not marching to Bitterbridge, it would only be a short visit and Mevanya would be back.

But the queen could not help but feel anguish and tremendous helplessness at having to ask this of her younger sister and not being able to do it herself. The mere thought of exposing Mevanya outside the castle chilled her bones. But she had to trust her, and those two great dragons who would not let her get hurt.

"Please, my dearest, be very careful," she squeezed the girl's hands, and looked into her eyes like a concerned mother.

Mevanya nodded, squeezing back.
