Evie's POV:
We have now been walking to DC for about three weeks. We used to have vehicles, but we had to ditch them once we ran out of gas. So now we have to walk, in the scorching hot sun, with little to no water. All of us are beyond thirsty and dehydrated at this point, but we're trying not to drink all of what little water we have, because it will be needed again tomorrow.
We've been searching for water on our journey, but everytime we think that we may have found a creek or river, it's just completely dried up. The one we found yesterday was so dry that instead of finding water, we found the lifeless bodies of hundreds of frogs. I would have suggested we eat them since we are all starving, but without knowing how long those frogs have been dead for, they were most likely not good to eat.
As we are walking, a herd started following us. Thankfully this herd is just from today, but all of us are just so weak that we don't have the strength to fight them right now. I would love to be able to fight them and get them off our tail, but doing that right now would basically be suicide.
I followed my dad into the woods to help him hunt, but unfortunately we didn't find anything but a worm. Dad crouched down onto the ground and started digging through the dirt trying to find more than one worm, but when he failed at finding more he brought the worm up to his mouth.
"That's just nasty." I sighed while staring at him as he took a bite.
He swallowed half of the worm and narrowed his eyes at me. "Ain't like there's a bunch of deer or pigs runnin' through here." He then held the other half of the worm out for me. "We can't be picky, Sunshine. Now eat."
I did as I was told and grabbed the worm from his hand before slowly bringing it to my mouth and swallowing it. I had never eaten a worm before, but then again, I've never had to. It actually wasn't as bad as you would think it is. It kind of tasted a little nutty, you know with the garnish of dirt it had all over it.
"Alright, it wasn't that bad." I admitted as my father started standing up. "At least it was better than the woodpecker we got a couple weeks ago."
"Anythin's better than that thing." Dad grunted as we turned around and started walking back to where our group is still walkin' on the road.
When we did get back to the group, Dad and I went up to Rick who was walking in front of everybody while holding onto Judith. Dad and I simply just shook our heads to state that we hadn't found anything, which should be obvious since we didn't come back to the group with squirrels over our shoulders, or a deer in our arms.
I was about to make my way back to Glenn when I saw dad glancing back at the herd that's been following us. Soon, Rick's eyes followed my father's gaze, and he shook his head. "We're not at our strongest. We'll get 'em when it's best. High ground, somethin' like that. They're not going anywhere."
Judith then started fussing, and I knew what that meant, she's hungry just like the rest of us. I was lucky I didn't need to worry about Vera being too hungry just yet. While I may be malnourished, milk has been coming out of me pretty consistently in order to feed my baby girl, and I'm thankful for that.
"She's hungry." Dad grunted while glancing at the baby in Ricks arms.
"She's okay." Rick told him while adjusting Judith in his arms. "She's going to be okay."
"We need to find water, food." Dad said gruffly.
I nodded, knowing that we all need to eat soon. "We'll find somethin' soon, Dad. We'll be okay."
"Yeah, it's gotta rain sooner or later." Rick commented.
"I'm gonna head out." Dad told Rick, making me whip my head towards him. "See what I can find."
