Evie's POV:

I never could have imagined that the "safe haven" we were brought to would be run by my grandmother. I haven't seen her since I was seven, right after my mother died. The last time I had seen her was when I was begging her not to send me away, but she did. She refused to keep me and instead of sending me to my father, decided to throw me into the foster care system, which was probably the worst year of my entire life. That is until Dad finally came to collect me.

Back at the farm when I found out my father had given up his rights to me I was angry. I was beyond angry. I was so mad at him though that I didn't even bother listening to why he had done it. My father fought for me, he wanted to keep me safe, and then when I was safe he reinstated his rights and came back for me. But that's not the same as what my grandmother did to me. She sent me away strictly because she didn't want me. I had heard what she told the social worker before I was ripped out of her home. She didn't want to keep me because of who my father is. She didn't want to raise the baby of a piece of "redneck trash".

So just imagine my surprise as I finally saw my grandmother again, right in front of me, staring at me like she never did anything wrong. She smiled at me and took a step closer, which made me hold onto Vera even tighter than I was before.

"Evelyn.." My grandmother, Deanna, spoke in a soft tone. "You're all grown up."

"Well, that's what happens when you abandon someone." I told her with a straight face.

"Oh, Evelyn-"

Before my grandmother could finish her words Glenn got in between us and spoke directly to the woman who gave me away years ago. "I think we should call it a night. We've had enough surprises and excitement for one day."

My grandmother nodded, "Of course, I'll go." She then started walking to the door but as she was about to leave she turned to me and spoke one more time. "But Evelyn, I'd love to catch up with you, whenever you're ready." She then left the house.

I stood there for a moment, thinking about what just happened. Glenn was staring at me almost as if I'm a wounded puppy, but honestly I think I'm okay. Yeah, it's a shock that my grandmother is here, running this community, but there's nothing I can do to change that. And it's not like I'm going to just leave this place because of her. My family, The ones who chose to keep me, are here. They're the ones that matter.

"Damn, any more relatives we need to know about?" Andrea broke the silence with her condescending tone, making everyone look at her.

"Don't know." I then shifted my gaze to my father who was watching my every move in order to gauge how I'm feeling about this whole situation. "Do I have any more relatives?"

Dad slowly nodded. "Bitch said somethin' bout Reg and the kids."

"And you didn't tell me?" My father didn't respond to my question, he just stood there watching me with a somewhat guilty look on his face. I ended up sighing as I walked past everyone and placed Vera in one of the cribs that someone in this community nicely brought over for us.

The rest of the night was silent. I for one didn't sleep very well, thinking about how my grandparents that abandoned me right after my mother died are here, and leading this community. Glenn on the other hand, slept like a baby. His arm was wrapped around my waist as he softly snored in my ear.

There were only two other people that were having issues sleeping. Rick and my father. My dad just stared out the window for most of the night, no doubt keeping watch to make sure we're all safe. Rick however was walking around the house for a while, examining it. After going through the house a couple times, Rick went outside. I had heard him whisper to my father that he was just going for a walk and would be back soon.
