"You remember Uncle Nathan love?" Mom asks me out of the blue.
Finishing my mouthfull of beans and toast, I glance up at her, "uh, yeah? Why?"
She sets her cutlery down, "We've been thinking, your dad and I. And we think it may be a good idea for you to go and see him soon."
"I mean," I pause, wiping my lip clean, "that'd be cool. Didn't think you'd be able to afford..." My mom stares pointedly, making me trail off as I come to a realisation.
"You want me to go alone?" I scrunch up my brows in confusion.
My dad strolls back in from outside, noticing my face and my mom's serious expression. 'You spoke to him?' He mouths to her, recieving a nod.
"Look son, you know we've been...struggling, so to speak." He takes a seat to my left.
"The point we're trying to make," Mom continues, "is that we think it'd be good for you stay with someone who can properly provide for you at the moment." I let my forehead rest against my knuckles as she speaks.
"It would be a great opportunity son. You can spend a year with Nathan while we get back on our feet." He takes my hand as I lower them down again.
"You know I don't wanna leave you, not when Mom is at the hospital every other week and we can barely afford central heating." I force myself not to cry at the thought of something happening and not being able to be there.
"We'll be fine love. You could find some actual friends, a little job." Mom tries to cheer me up, "Maybe even a lad." That has me smirking through the sadness.
"Just think about it son. Now finish your breakfast, your beans are going cold." My dad orders, standing up and heading back out to clean the garden.

Pzzzzp! Pzzzzp! Pzz-
The sound of my phone alarm cut off as I blindly turn it off. Burying my face in the pillow, I groan and give up trying to move, slowly slipping back to sleep...
"ELIOTT!!" I jump, hitting my head against my bedside drawer as I scramble out of bed. The voice was gruff, with a faint english timbre.
"I'M UP!" I yawp, my forehead throbbing from the bump. I quickly shower and get dressed, throwing on my grey jeans and a button up shirt accented with ashy grey.
As I slip downstairs, I catch the smell of something smoky. "You aint burning nothing again are you?" I accuse my Uncle Nathan, who turns to me with an unamused look on his face.
"No." He huffs, "You're never gonna hush about that?"
"Nope." I say as he dishes it out, digging in as soon as I can. "Cheers."
Puss suddenly clambers onto the kitchen table, poking his nose around. "Oi." I glare at him, earning an unbothered stare.
"I can't believe I let you keep that thing." Nathan comments, shaking his head.
