I startled and stepped away from Ryan. I don’t know what to feel, frankly. I don’t even know how he will react. I guess I should play along, “Hey, it’s about time you open the door.”

“…”

“You look nice in that tux!” I grinned,

“Ryan?” Cubbie’s face showed no sign of green meadows and sunshine,

“Yes?” He whimpered,

“Did something happen?”

“I’m not sure I understand you.” He stammered, “What are you trying to say?”

I sighed; Cubbie is such an ass sometimes.

“I don’t know.” He scoffed, “Since it’s valentines today, maybe you asked the kid out?”

“Uh… Yes…” He tensed, while I was about to burst out laughing. “Is that wrong?”

I snorted, “Don’t mind him, Ryan.”

“You guys think I didn’t see you two minutes ago?”

“Guilty.” Ryan mumbled. Cubbie beckoned to Ryan with his hand,

“Cubbie, what are you doing?” I asked, his face remained coldly hard. I sighed,

“Don’t worry, Ally.” Ryan smiled reassuringly and took a brave step towards Cubbie,

“I’m sorry about this.” I whispered to him and he winked back at me,

“Get inside, Ally.” Cubbie ordered, “Go look for Nate or something.”

I groaned and brushed past him, “You don’t have to do this, Cubbie.”

“Sshh.”

“Urgh.”

I don’t know if I should be pissed at Cubbie for doing that, but I guess I’m going to have to deal with it. I don’t know if I should eavesdrop their conversation, but maybe later. I searched all over his house for Nate, which is like finding a nerd in a game convention. Then I heard rustling from behind this door, which I guess it’s Cubbie’s room and knocked. “Hey, you’re here!” Rebecca exclaimed. She was wearing this beautiful dress and it looked perfect on her,

“Yea.” I chuckled, “So, where is he taking you?”

“I don’t know, he won’t tell me.”

“Uh oh.”

“Yup.” She sighed, “Thanks for doing this.”

“No problem! Where’s Nate?”

“He’s in here somewhere.” She looked back, “Nate!”

Then I heard his voice, mumbling something that only his dad understands. He peeked from behind her legs, “Hey, buddy!” I kneeled down and scooped him up,

“Ally!” He giggled. I can’t describe how I feel when he calls my name. I mean, he’s a two year old and I’m nowhere near in being a part of his family.

“I forgot to tell you. Is it okay if I bring someone along?” I asked,

“Who’s the friend?” She smirked,

“Well…”

“BOYFRIEND!” Cubbie shouted from the front door.

I gave myself a smack on the forehead and shook my head, “What he said.” I finally murmured,

“That’s fine with me, it’s valentines anyways.” She smiled, “I’m sorry for taking your day.”

“That’s okay. Ryan asked to hang out after Cubbie asked me to babysit, so it’s his fault.”

She laughed, “Okay.”

“I wanna play!” Nate announced. He was propped on my hip with his head nuzzled on the crook of my neck,

“Okay, we’ll go play!” I bounced him,

“I better go back and get ready.” Rebecca said more to herself,

“Okay.” I replied as she disappeared back into her room. I turned to Nate and said, “Hey, I got you something!”

“What?” He exclaimed excitedly,

“Sshh, it’s a surprise!”

“Sshh.” He played along. With Nate on my arms, I strode towards the front door while he giggles silently. As I was about to reach the front door, I heard Cubbie and Ryan. Obviously, I couldn’t resist so I tried to listen.

“How long have you been wanting to ask her out?” I heard Cubbie asked,

“Ever since I saw her for the first time.” Ryan confidently replied,

This is going to take a while. I thought, slumped on the wall with Nate, surprisingly, calmly and quietly stayed still.

“What makes you so sure?” Cubbie sounded serious,

“I don’t know. I trust her and she trusts me, so why not? We became closer, and so I’ve decided to ask her. Thankfully, she said yes.”

“Do you know that she grew up without a father?”

“Yes, sir. I’m aware of that.”

“Well, I’m the closest thing she has to a father.”

I choked; did he really just say that?

He went on, “If you even dare to hurt her, just one bit, you’re going to have to deal with me.” He threatened, “Then my band mates, who deals with things differently, would dive in and you’ll be in deep trouble.”

“With all due respect, Cubbie, sir, I really care about her.” Ryan replied,  “I won’t even dare to hurt her. I made myself swear that I’d never hurt a girl my whole life. I owe that to my little sister.” That’s actually a good answer, and I know that he was telling the truth. I was touched. “And if I did, I’d never forgive myself.”

“Do you mean what you say?”

“Absolutely! With all my heart, blood, cells, bones, sweat, pride, and tears. I swear, on my sister’s life.”

“You’re a good guy, Ryan. I’m going to have to trust you.”

“I’m honored.”

“Cubbie?” I scowled, “What in the world?”

Cubbie grinned innocently, “Hey, superman.”

“Daddy!” Nate exclaimed. Just because he just learned to talk a little fluently, he can’t stop saying names of the things and people he sees.

“Ryan, I’m going to need the keys.” I said,

“Sure thing.” He chucked his car keys to me,

“Where are you going?” Cubbie asked,

“Away from here.” I lied,

“Ally.” He called but I decided to ignore him,

“Ryan, I’m sorry.” I said before I exit his house,

He chuckled, “It’s okay, relax.”
