On Finding Chance

Part 1 - Chapter 1

Madie has been people-watching for 30 minutes now. As always, Gab, her ever annoying best friend is late. They planned to meet at 10am in Necessary Provisions and it's already 10:30. She is starting to get pissed off. First, she is never a morning person and will still be in bed at this hour if it is a normal weekend. Second, it was Gab who suggested the time for their meetup. Lastly, waiting is one of the things she hates the most.

She grabs her phone, types "GABBY MARIONETTE! Where are you? I've been waiting for ages!" and hits the send button.

While waiting for her friend's reply, Madie looks out the window and sees a boy holding a sunflower at the sidewalk. The kid, about the age of 8, is all dressed up with his cap, baby blue polo, black pants and rubber shoes. "Aww. He is so cute", she thought. Suddenly, the little boy looks at her and walks towards her. Embarrassed, she breaks eye contact, bows her head and opens her bag as if searching for something. She is hoping it is just her imagination playing with her and that he is not going in her direction.

Knock. Knock.

Madie looks up and he is already standing across from her outside the window. He smiles and extends out the sunflower. She points to herself and asks, "For me?" The boy nods, leaves the flower on the floor and starts to run.

She jerks up from her seat to follow him but he is no longer in sight. She picks up the flower and notices that a note comes with it. Her eyes widened in surprise. She turns around, looks left and right and stares at the paper again.

Someday, when we meet again, I'll marry you.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE????? IS THIS SOME KIND OF A JOKE? WHO IS THAT KID????? What on earth is happening? How did he know my name? Is he Chance? Is he the one who will marry me someday? Ugh! This is so frustrating. ARRRRGGGGG!"

Madie is screaming inside her head when Gab finally shows up.

"Madie! Sorry! I'm late."

"Did you know about this?" Madie asks while handing out the note to Gab. As she is reading it, a smile forms on her face.

"What?", Madie asks.

"Nope. Who is Chance? Yay! She has a secret admirer.", Gab teases.

"Tsk! It is not that. Come on. I'll just tell you the details."

Inside the coffee shop, Madie tells the story while Gab enjoys her piece of Oreo cheesecake.

"SWEET!!!", Gab blurts out.

"I know, right? But it is also very creepy. I have no idea who this guy is. I don't know of anyone who likes me. Do you?"

Gab shakes her head.

"Ok, fine. Let us forget about him and talk about you. What do you want to wear to my brother's concert?"
