"He was looking at me again.

I know this is no way to begin this, but it was true. He was indeed staring at me from the left side if the room.
Our eyes meet.
He grins at me, and I find myself grinning back.
I quickly divert my eyes, feeling my heart speed up a bit.
This wasn't the first time I had had this feeling, and along with it came a cloud of dread.
I couldn't let it happen again.
No. I wouldn't be able to suffer through that.
So I locked away my heart and tried not to look at him again.

It didn't work.

I would find my eyes sliding slyly back to him, as if my eyes were cats and he was the prize, a bowl of milk.
Every time I would return my gaze back to the screen, and every time I would feel the tug of his eyes on me.
Just. me.

I wait.

Finally, the bell rings, signaling the end of seventh period.
I get up, packing my stuff up as quickly as possible before-

'Hey Evelyn.'
I slow my packing and turn to look at him.
He gives me a warm smile that fills my body with unwelcome warmpth.
'Hey.'
I reply.
I can feel a smile bubbling up from inside me, but I push it down.
'What do you get when you cross two ducks and a match?'
He pauses, then
'Fire quackers.'
I smile, but not so much as the joke but as to what I can feel.
Damn.
'I've got to go.' I shoulder my bag, and smile at him again.
'Alright. Bye Evelyn.'
'Bye.'I reply, and leave the room.
Suddenly, I hear him call after me 'HEY! ARE YOU A FART? 'CUZ YOU BLEW ME AWAY!'

"...And that was how I realized that I was in love with your grandfather."
I smile at my grandchildren clustered around me, and then feel my husband pat my knee.
I look over at him, and he whispers in my ear

"Firequackers."
