 ALMOST A MONTH EARLIER

The day I met her for the first time was the day my world almost turned upside around. I had escaped a horrible accident and luckily got out alive from it. A drunken driver had almost killed me and made me see death so close to me. I had thought of what I would lose if I died but nothing was that precious that I would want to live for.

It made me think of what I had in my life besides family and friends. I realized that life was a nightmare without someone to spend it with. I realized I had no one who would take care of me when I would be ill, no one to worry about me when I had barely got out of an accident.

My car was damaged so I was travelling in a taxi. I told the driver the address to Mark's home. He was my best friend, we had been together since childhood and no other man or woman was able to separate us. Now, he was marrying a woman he loved and I was going to meet him.

As I reached Mark's house, I paid the driver and went inside the gates. His guards were a little astonished to see me coming in a taxi but didn't dare ask anything. I went inside the house and found it silent.

Nobody could be found inside. I decided to go upstairs and when I reached the first room after stairs, I heard women giggling. When I glanced inside the room, I saw the women were standing with a woman. All of their backs were to me but they were definitely standing with the bride. I recognized her by the white veil she was wearing, ain't I intelligent?

I decided to leave them undisturbed and proceeded to Mark's room. He was not there and I left his room. As I was passing by a room, I heard faint music coming from the room. The door of the room was covered with white lace curtains. Nudging the curtains aside, I opened the door and was met with louder music.

After closing the door quickly, I turned around and was astonished with sight in front of me. The music was a slow type and the light was dim, perfect for a couple dance. So the woman was dancing in front of me, but with an imaginary man. She was wearing a floor length dress and her brown hair fell on her back. She looked gorgeous and oblivious to the fact that I was standing here.

She took a step forward, shook her head then did it again. She was probably practicing and I was intruding here but I didn't care if I was. An amused smile tugged at the corner of my lips.

I couldn't look away from her form. She was mesmerizing, captivating and fascinating.

I took a step closer to her and I had the doubt that she had not noticed me yet. My feet had their own will and they didn't stop until I reached her where she suddenly spun round, round and landed in my arms.

It was an instinct to gather her in my arms, like my body knew her even if my mind didn't. Her back was to my chest. As my arms circled around her waist I observed that she was breathing heavily.

She laughed a little, and for the first time I felt alive, the sound reverberating through my body. Her head rested exactly were my heart was. She leaned her body completely into mine and swayed slowly.

Her hands rested on my forearms which were around her waist. I started swaying slowly and tried to see her face from the side. I glanced down at her and her lashes were touching her cheeks meaning she had closed her eyes. I couldn't make out her features much because the light was dim.

"Where have you been?" She asked me and the question hit home.

"I am here, now."

She turned around and I was glad that I could see her face now. But she placed her head on my chest again, not bothering to look at me and circled her arms around my neck. Her eyes opened a little and I found out she had warm Hazel or Brown eyes, I couldn't differ due to the light.

"You shouldn't have come here, you know that."

"I didn't mean to intrude on your dance." She chuckled.

"You know what I am talking about," she said and her voice was driving me crazy.

"No, I don't. Tell me ..."

***********

"Sir, shall I bring your coffee?" Casper asked and involuntarily brought me out of the past. There was no going back and revising what was done. What had been done could not be changed.

I closed my eyes when I felt regret gripping on my nerves.

"Are you alright, sir?" Casper asked.

I nodded and sighed heavily.

"Yes, you can bring my coffee."

Casper bowed lightly and left my room. Alone, I stared at the picture in front of me. Of me and Mark, together. Regret and guilt was hurting me from inside. I had betrayed my friend and did what could have ruined our friendship, if Mark had been alive.

But he wasn't, and I was trying to make amends which seemed impossible. I didn't know what should I do so I kept listening to my heart. Kept doing what I thought would be right.
