~Evan's POV~

"YOU WHAT!?"

I grimaced. I knew this was going to be his reaction when I told him. I could have kept it all from Derek, make him believe with everyone else that I really am the father of Shelly's unborn child...but I couldn't do it. It was bad enough to lie to everyone else but to lie to Derek? The thought of him hating me because of a lie...I couldn't bare the thought of it.

It was better to tell him the truth now so that if he got angry with me, it wouldn't be because he thought that I had been lying to him from the start. Still, there was no doubt that he was furious with me at the moment, practically seething with anger.

After driving back to school with Shelly, Derek made his move and pounced on me, firing furious demands as to where I have been and why had I taken Shelly with me. He demanded to know what we had talked about and when I refused to answer him he had become even more upset. I didn't like seeing him that way but I refused to talk about it in front of so many spectators. I told him to wait until we were at my house to speak of it but that hadn't soothed him. Like a grumpy bear he had glared at me all day.

Now in the privacy of my room I finally told him what Shelly and I agreed to and like I had predicted...Derek was not please. I sighed. Why did everything have to be to difficult? Just when Derek and I were finally getting more...intimate.

      "No," Derek growled.

      "Derek..."

He shook his head, looming over me from my sitting position on the edge of the bed. "No."

      "I can't abandon her."

"She's not your responsibility." His words were calm but I could hear the strain from the anger he was trying to hold back. His face was already turning red...

     "We're all she's got."

     "We?"

"I'm," I corrected instantly, "I'm the only one she's got."

"Fuck that," he spat, "why the hell would you agree to something like that? That's bullshit!"

     "She's desperate."

Derek leaned forward, placing his hands on the bed on either side of me. He spoke, our faces only inches apart. "She's not your responsibility. Shelly got herself into this mess and she has no fucking right to drag you in it."

"You're right," I agreed reasonably, "but how can I just abandon her when she asked for my help, Derek? Her own father is willing to kick her out if she doesn't tell him who the father is."

Derek pushed himself up, turning around. "That's her problem."

I stared at his back. "How can you say something like that? What if it was your sister?"

Derek visibly stiffened and swirled around, glaring at me. "Don't bring Kim into this. She's a brat but she's no tramp."

      "Neither is Shelly."
