Second.

Another day, a new way to hopelessly hope, to find a new way to struggle. The sunlight peeked through the holes of their ceilingless roof, targeting his tired body. One of them slapped his cheeks, which forced him to carry his worthless weight. The smell of bacon and egg wafted through the warm air, tickling his numb nose.

It couldn't be.

He dragged himself out of the family's room; to what they called their kitchen. His younger sister was already waiting happily; it was her first time to taste such food. Even his sleepy eyes were awakened; he couldn't believe what he's seeing.

"Spent all for the breakfast!" his mother said.
"Why? How will we eat tomorrow? How can we survive?" he complained.
"Don't worry. I've already decided." His mother said, with a little smile on her face. She touched the pearl necklace she's wearing.

"You said it was a legacy. We should have thought of another way." He said. His mother's eyes were enveloped with sadness; sorrow had taken the smile on her old face.

An hour passed and the sun intensely shone, urging everyone to open their umbrellas, or at least stay home. He couldn't do both. He needed to work for a living, anything would do. His sister didn't to school but to sidewalks and streets, carrying a can that clattered every time.

Every drop of sweat had its worth, every drop of blood counted. It was a life that if you could not prove that you fit, you would not survive. He felt like he was carrying the world, forever. But he never ever thought of giving up.

His mother, without his knowledge, gladly made her way to the pawnshop. She traded her only legacy, for a month's survival. No second thoughts, family first, she handed the necklace. On her way home, she met someone - something she didn't expect. She had a firm grip on the money, determined to take them home. She didn't break or let them until a sharp, rusty knife buried itself on her side, spilling her hungry blood.

"My children. My family."

On her last breath, last energy, she protected their only wealth, glad to see her life-stealers ran away; chased by favourable justice.

At least, the money was safe.

He heard the news, tears streamed down his face. He let out yelps of anguish; the cold atmosphere froze his lonely soul. Sorrow had ruled his world; darkness engulfed it with absolute greed.

He lost his light.

His father went home, excited to bring her wife a gift. A cheap necklace - a replacement of the old one. But, the love of his life was there. Despite the warm affection was her cold, dead body. They couldn't afford funeral, so their mother was buried somewhere, crossed twigs upon her poor grave.

His father, who couldn't take the lost, changed. He cried all night, filling his broken heart with immense load. His wife's death attacked him, especially his heart.

He lost his foundation.

For the second time, he cried a river. His world stopped to revolve, seemed to double its size. He was swallowed by fear, agony.

Below was his father's corpse, he shakily climbed on a chair.

There were a lot of things inside his troubled mind. Drenched in unexplainable sweat, he reached for the necklace. Chill everywhere, the eerie silence was deafening. He heard his thundering heartbeat and heavy sighs. His blurry vision couldn't focus on anything but he should - no. He must. Then, a whisper, out of nowhere.

Do it.

He wore the necklace. This time, it was different. His perspired hand shook. After a while, there it was, he remembered someone.

"My sister!"

But it's too late. The sudden arrival of his lost consciousness made him slip out of the weakened chair. Then, the necklace wrapped his neck with great force. He couldn't do anything. It was a different way of survival. He tried to reach for something but he couldn't breathe, tears on the corner of his eye. Nothing to do,

But to die.
