Evergreen Universe

They say,

That the clearest way into the universe,

Is through the forest,

But what if,

My universe is comprised of neither star,

Nor galaxy,

But of every facet of your soul?

Like a diamond,

You glimmer,

Even in harsh darkness.

Like the evening dew that hangs

On the crooked branches of the birches overhead,

You shine.

Like the orange panorama,

In the valley sprawling before me,

Your eyes glow,

One with the sunset,

Even in spite of the tears that dampen them.

Like the sharp crags,

Of the cliff to my right,

Your words drive a dagger into my skin,

And twist it back and forth.

Like the sapphire depths,

Of the Bay below,

Your eyes dart around,

Focusing on everything at once,

Yet seeing nothing at all.

Yet, my every expression of gratitude,

For the bliss I feel in your presence...

My every offering of a compliment,

You turn into an insult.

Every daisy, violet, and hydrangea,

Left on your doorstep,

Ends up torn to shreds by greedy fingers.

Every blessed rose, every single godforsaken rose

You left to wilt.

Every time I got on one knee,

Pulled out a diamond ring,

That still, in all its glory, was outshone by you,

And begged you: "Marry me,"

You slammed the door in my face.

In lieu of:

"Till death do us part."

At death do we meet.

And as I stand here,

Enveloped by the grasp of nature,

Accompanied by only God,

The forest seems to whisper to me:

"Your lack of patience is why,

You pour a little heavy on the vodka,

And carry that flask wherever you go."

"Your lack of patience is why,

Instead of being entwined in her embrace,

Your hair is entwined with the twigs,

Of this haunted forest."

"Your lack of patience is why,

Instead of falling into your arms,

She'd rather fall off this jagged cliff,

Into the freezing depths beneath."
