⬆️ the song Sophie is humming

The sunrise came too soon in my opinion.

I was humming as I washed the dishes when first light peeked through the windows of the shack.

I groaned as I flopped down on to the floor in front of the couch which Pidge and Hunk were sitting on.

"Long night Sophie?" Pidge questioned.

I laughed as I leaned back against the space between their legs.

"You could say that." I smiled up at him.

"So what have you been up to since I saw you last Soph?" Hunk asked.

"Not much. I can't sneak into the Garrison anymore so I've got literally noting to do anymore. But man do I miss those mechanics, they were so much fun and taught me so much." I replied with a faint smile at the memories.

"You snuck into the Garrison?" Pidge asked obviously shocked.

"Yeah. I was always so bored when Keith was away so I when I started sneaking in I simply followed him though out the day. Then my curiosity got the better of me and I started to explore, that's when the mechanics found me. They're teacher is rarely there so instead of turning me in they took me in and started to teach me the stuff they knew and eventually I was actually helping them with their work. Thanks to them I'm now a skilled mechanic and weapons identifier. I miss them, they were like the family Keith and I didn't get to grow up with." I explained.

"She built her and Keith's bikes from scratch. Not much compared to what she learned how to do though. Those mechanics don't mess around when it comes to their toys, it's go big or go home." Hunk added.

It was then that Shiro jolted awake and scared us all.

Keith only jumped, Lance jumped back against the wall and stared at Shiro, and I ended up in between Hunk and Pidge with us all holding on to each other.

Shiro panted as he looked around and jumped out of the bed before rushing outside.

Keith went to follow him and I jumped off the couch and in front of him to stop him.

"Give him a bit. He just woke back up after God knows what. He's gonna need to collect his thoughts and realize that he's safe here." I told him.

Keith nodded and resorted to sitting at the table and staring out the window above Hunk and Pidge's heads. I sighed and resumed my previous place in front of the couch talking with Pidge and Hunk.

"What's under that sheet?" Pidge asked awhile later.

"It's a secret. Keith and I aren't finished with it quite yet." I answered making him peer at me suspiciously.

"I'm serious. It's not really mine to show anyway, it's totally up to Keith."

He excepted that answer and moved on as Keith stood.

"Sophie?" He questioned.

"Go on." I said nodding to the door, knowing he was asking if it had been enough time yet.

"It must really suck having a wash out for an older brother huh?" Lance spoke up after Keith was gone.

"Excuse me? What did you just say about my brother?" I demanded.

"That it must suck having him as your brother." He repeated.

"1) no one talks about Keith that way and gets away with it, 2) he's the best pilot of his generation and he didn't even finish his schooling or training, and 3) he's only two years older than me and he's raised me since I was 5, I'm now 16. I owe him everything for that. So no it does not suck to have Keith as my brother, it's an honor." I glared as I stood up and stepped towards Lance.

He shrank away from me as I continued towards him.

"Understood cargo pilot?" I questioned as I continued to glare up at him.

"I'm fight-"

"I don't care who or what you are! No one insults my brother." I almost decked him right then and there.

And I probably would have had Keith and Shiro not come back in at that moment.

"Sophie you wanna give me a hand with this?" Keith asked as he walked towards the wall the had the sheet over it.

"Yep." I smiled as I followed him.

Together we ripped off the sheet and allowed the others to see all of the stuff we had up there.

"What have you been working on?" Shiro asked disbelieving.

"I can't explain it, really. After getting booted from the Garrison, I was kind of lost and Sophie and I found ourselves drawn out to this place. It's like something some energy, was telling us to search." Keith tried to explain.

Neither us actually had an explanation for it all and didn't think we ever get a definitive explanation for it either.

"For what?" Shiro questioned.

"Well, we didn't really know at the time until we stumbled across this area. It's an outcropping of giant boulders with caves covered in these ancient markings. Each tells a slightly different story about a blue lion, but they all share clues leading to some event, some arrival happening last night. Then, you showed up." I answered as I pointed to what I was referring to on the wall.

"I should thank you all for getting me out. Lance, right?" Shiro said as he turned to the others.

Lance went to shake Shiro's hand but saw his metal arm and hesitated before smiling actually shaking his hand.

Shiro smiled too before offering his hand to Pidge and Hunk.

"The nervous guy's Hunk. I'm Pidge. So, did anyone else from your crew make it out?" Pidge asked as he shook Shiro's hand.

"I'm not sure. I remember the mission and being captured. After that, it's just bits and pieces." Shiro admitted.

"Yeah, sorry to interrupt, but back to the aliens. Where are they now? Are they coming? Are they coming for us? Where are they at this very moment?" Hunk rambled off.

"I can't really put it together. I remember the word "Voltron." It's some kind of weapon they're looking for, but I don't know why. Whatever it is, I think we need to find it before they do."

"Well, last night, I was rummaging through Pidge's stuff, and I found this picture. Look, it's his girlfriend." Hunk chuckled as he rummaged through Pidge's bag and pulled out a picture.

"Uh Hunk that could be his sister." I pointed out while Pidge said, "Hey, give me that! What were you doing in my stuff?" and snatched the picture back.

"I was looking for a candy bar. But, then, I started reading his diary."

"What?" Pidge interrupted him before he snatched the journal from him as well.

"You should have just asked me for more food silly." I chuckled as I moved to stand beside Keith.

"I noticed the repeating series of numbers the aliens are searching for -looks a lot like a Fraunhofer line." Hunk ignored Pidge and continued.

"Frown who?" Keith asked.

"It's a number describing the emission spectrum of an element, only, this element doesn't exist on Earth. I thought it might be this Voltron. I think can build a machine to look for it, like a Voltron Geiger counter." Hunk explained.

"Hunk, you big, gassy genius!" Lance grinned.

"It's pretty fascinating, really. The wavelength looks like this." Hunk replied as he pulled out a folded piece of paper and unfolded it to show us.

"Give me that!" Keith exclaimed as he snatched it from Hunk and walked over to the wall.

He held it up against a picture of the set mountains where the lion markings are located and the line almost perfectly lined up with the tops of the ridge.

"Sophie grab your tools. Hunk's gonna need them and you may need to fix whatever it is we find out there." Keith told me.

I grinned before I ran over to where my tools sat and strapped on my tool belt before picking up the box of other tools and dragging Hunk outside.
