Why are the parents always dead, in jail, or on a business trip? Okay, so I may be a hypocrite because I actually did this (oops.) But most of the time, if the parents are dead, the main character never thinks about them. Not even for a second. She just goes on with her life like nothing happened. If they're still alive, they're most likely on a business trip across the world in Asia or something. Or the author just completely forgets about them.
E.g. Chapter 1: parents are mentioned once.
Chapter 5: parents are mention once.
Chapters 5 - last chapter: never mentioned again.
