red lips parted into a seductive grin
white teeth flashing through the pink cloud of scented smoke
the cheap perfume caused me to cough, and my eyes to water,
though i never blinked once
eyes fixed on this smile beyond a wall of mist
a high pitched chuckle on the other side, and a familiar sigh
sharp painted nails pinch a cigarette
orange coals burning out the other end
the end came to her mouth
and she puffed out yellow smoke
i coughed once more, blowing the yellow smoke back at her
unintentionally
the red smirk closed into a tight line for a moment
a moment
then a pair of large eyes lurch forward to ask a question i can't answer
the teeth appear once more
and she sinks back into the fog
who was she?
to each his own meaning
who was she?
with the freckled stars on her pink cheeks
the dark violet eyelids that slowly blinked once, delirious
dark lashes that curled around the moon in her eyes
the rushing sound of the ocean when she whispered,
whispered that unanswerable question
who was she?
who was she;
who was she.
