Living Metaphor

A metaphor is something that says it's something else.
But what about me?
I say I'm something
But am I something else?
I call myself a geek or an outcast.
But am I just another wallflower in the crowd?
What happens when you're not who you thought you were?
When you're caught up in a lie
When you're trapped in your own metaphor.
When you don't know what truth to go by.
Does that make your self portrait any less true?
Is who you are what people think of you,
What's the truth?
What you think of yourself?
What I think of you?
Are we characterized by how we see ourselves?
Or is it others' perspectives that matters in the end.
Does it matter how I felt?
Or just how you believe I was?
In the end am I nothing but something else
Because that's what people say is true.
I'll try to tell you I'm something,
But you're the one who creates my description, my reputation.
So I'm a living metaphor.
Because I'll try to tell you what I am
But that, the truth, is never good enough for you.
