Katty let me go out on my own a few more times after that. Her only requirements were that she knew vaguely where I was going and how long I would be gone. I caught sight of the dog a couple more times too, though she seemed to be attempting to stay out of sight. I supposed, as long as she was keeping out of trouble she couldn't be too badly in need of help. I still tried to coax her to me a few times.
But today was just not my day. I hadn't seen the dog in a while and I was beginning to worry. Enough that I was considering asking Katty if there was anything we could do to track the dog down. It was distracting me from my instincts to avoid danger.
I jumped in surprise when a man and a woman suddenly appeared at my sides and hustled me into a car. I sucked in a panicked breath and fought to get away as they shoved me with inhuman strength. Vampires.
I struggled to calm my breathing and think. I was sandwiched between the female and another male while the first male got into the front seat with a driver. I decided the driver was the best one to fight. A crashed car would draw attention and I could run.
I tensed to lunge and my eyes widened as I happened to glance out the window and spot Tony, moseying down the street. The Vampires stopped at a red light and I took the opportunity to shove my palm against the window. It made a thumping sound that drew Tony's attention. I screamed her name. Then I was struggling to breathe as the male clapped a hand over my mouth and nose. But I had accomplished what I meant to.
Tony cocked her head curiously, her steps faltering as she studied the car I was trapped in. She redirected, coming over to the passenger side and rapping her knuckles against the window. The passenger feigned confusion and rolled his window down an inch.
"Can I help you?"
Tony bent, trying to get a look in the back. I struggled and expelled what air I had left to make another plaintive noise as loud as I could. Tony's teeth grit as she eyed the male in front again. She drew back a fist and smashed the glass.
The light turned green and the driver slammed on the gas. Though, he probably would have even if it hadn't been green. Tony made a desperate grab, managing to slice up the side of the Vampires face pretty good if the way he screeched and held his face was any indication. Tony sprinted after the car. I threw myself at the driver, reaching for the wheel. I was pulled back before I could make contact so I threw a foot out instead, managing to catch him in the ear.
I yelped as the female bit into my arm just as the male sank his teeth into my shoulder. Pheromones flooded my system, far too fast. I did my best to crane around to find Tony again. She had given up the chase, unable to catch us and remain undetected by the humans. But she shot me a determined look before she wheeled and ran back towards Katty's building.
I went lax with a sigh. There was nothing more I could do. I could barely even think. And I didn't dare hope.
I woke up a little as I was transported into a private plane. Then I was dumped on a small couch and covered over with a blanket. It was warm and comfortable enough that I dropped off again.
The next time I woke up I attempted to remain calm and relaxed, feigning sleep. The Vampires were speaking French. Which was not something I wanted to hear. Other than Juliette, there was nothing for me in France.
Their conversation lulled, then ground to a halt before I had learned anything useful. I jumped and sucked in a breath of alarm when my arm was grabbed and lifted. I looked up in terror at the Vampire male holding my wrist, drawing me close enough to his mouth to bite.
I jerked away, trying to rip out of his grasp. "No! Don't!"
He ignored me, gripping my wrist tighter and clamping down on my arm. I winced when I felt him taking blood. I let him feed from me as he flooded me with pheromones again. I weakly struggled when he took enough to make me feel sluggish. Then I gave up. Where I was going, it was probably better if he accidentally killed me. All Sophia and Pierre would get would be my lifeless body.
