Sage|Vera

Vera flipped through the pages of a teen magazine as she sat under the hair dryer in a salon. Sage sat in the seat next to her, some of his hair wrapped in pink rollers. He looked both adorable and ridiculous.  ❝You have too much hair. This is taking forever.❞ he whined, showing Vera a frown.

❝Is it my fault you have no friends?❞

I'll ignore that. ❞ he voiced quietly, a part of him not really liking how badly the truth hurt. ❝Why are these...things still in my hair?
Why did I let your sister put them in my hair?

❝Because it's her salon, and she knows how to work her magic? They are also called rollers, Einstein.❞

He glared at her.

❝Stop complaining! You can leave for all I care.❞ she said and then returned the glare a few seconds later. ❝Don't you dare leave or I will kick your ass.❞ she threatened, a smile replacing the death stare she gave him.

You make zero sense. You don't want me but you do want me.
I've never been so confused in my life.

His response caught Vera by surprise, where she looked away and tried to focus on something else in the salon. She thought that if she stared long enough, Sage would realize that she liked him. Faking a cough, she mumbled under her breath as she responded to him. ❝You don't make any sense, either.❞

Don't turn this on me, woman.

❝You know what? Go get me some ice cream.❞

... In the middle of winter? Truly a genius way to change the subject.

❝Yes! Get me a coffee too. There's a Starbucks not too far away, and I'm sure you're going to make so many people happy to witness you in those rollers.❞

This is belittling. I'm not your slave, Vera.

❝No, you're my boyfriend. So...❞ she answered back quickly, and wasn't sure if she should quit it with this joke now. It didn't feel as funny anymore when she actually did want him to be her boyfriend. Was she making it too obvious? If she spent too much time overthinking, she wouldn't enjoy the experience as much. And a crush was just a crush to Vera, it would go away over time. Or, she could be lucky and somehow, something will blossom between them. Vera's smile grew as she shook these thoughts out of her head, not wanting all of her time with Sage to be wasted because of her feelings.

He stood, reaching for his coat. Vera watched him as he pulled it up his arms, and laughed when he tried to put on his hat and failed because of the rollers in his hair. Vera's sister, Erina, rushed over to him after she finished with an actual client, fixing his rollers for him for what seemed to be the fifth time this hour. Sage thanked her silently, by showing her a grin because he knew he was cutting her impatience in half, before dropping his gaze on Vera. Their eyes met, and they didn't say anything for a long while. Sage felt the urge to hold her for some odd reason, and almost got lost in the comfort Vera's inviting eyes was offering him. Blinking, Sage zipped up his coat and checked his pockets to make sure he had his phone and wallet. ❝I'm going to get myself some breakfast. Have fun...with all your hair.❞

❝Sage!❞ Vera reached for his coat and held it tightly to her chest before he could grab it back from her. She looked up at him, and again they were both lost in that silent and gentle mental ocean, a world of nothing more than the thoughts they were too anxious to let out into the world. Sage wouldn't have pulled his coat away, anyway. And even took a step closer to her, standing over her now. This didn't intimidate Vera in the slightest, even with his height blocking her view of the front door, her sister, and the rest of the salon. She was looking at all she needed to see at this moment.  ❝Please get me something too. I'm starving.❞

Defend your case, ❞ is all he replied with.

❝Sage, you're supposed to be my boyfriend.
Why can't you just do this for me? Are you unhappy with me? Do you wish to be with another?❞ she expressed quite dramatically, letting go of his coat to reach for his hand. What was she doing? She didn't know, but she didn't want to stop. Sage rolled his eyes at her act, but paused at the feel of Vera intertwining their fingers. He took a look at their joined hands, and fought his smile when she squeezed his fingers and brought it to her chin. ❝Give me another chance to make you happy, and I won't mess up. I know we have something so so beautiful here, Sage.❞

Please stop this madness. I'll get you the food-❞ he bit on his tongue and forced himself to stop speaking when Vera left a soft kiss on his knuckles. ❝Why are you like this...❞ he trailed off, his voice getting softer after the pass of each word. She kissed his hand again and closed her eyes, no longer acting with him. Sage felt a sting in his chest, and just squeezed her fingers back when she pulled her mouth away. Deep inside, Sage wanted her to continue kissing him. ❝What do you want to eat?❞

Her eyes brightened, and looked so beautiful as she quickly dropped his hand. Beaming, Vera adjusted herself under the dryer and reached for her cellphone.
❝I'll text it to you so you don't forget the order. Thank you so much, baby.❞

❝Thank you so much baby, ❞ he mocked, scowling at her even though his heart was doing ten thousand backflips. ❝Fat ass.❞

She pursed her lips at him, showing him her best kissy face. ❝Just admit that you love me, babe.❞

❝Yeah, yeah. I love you.❞ Sage voiced, not letting himself overthink his lines. It shocked Vera, but she masked it well by laughing it off. She was freaking out inside, though, and was forcing herself not to hyperventilate. ❝Be back soon.❞ it seemed like he whispered this, and knew he was going to slap himself as soon he was out of sight from Vera.

❝See you soon.❞ she said, and watched him walk to the door. ❝And I love you, Sage the babe. I really love you.❞ she finished, and Sage was grinning as soon as he turned his back from her and stepped out into the cool winter.

A/N - Hello, my lovelies. It's Gyana. Yes, it is seriously me. It's been four years, right? I'm so sorry. For the readers who still want to read Sage and Vera, here is the draft that has been here for four years. I added a bit to it, and finished it up because it wasn't complete, but I hope you enjoy. I'm still thinking of where I want Sage & Vera to go. Because my writing has changed somewhat, and I feel like you might notice some kind of shift. But I'm going to try to keep it similar to the writing style/vibe I had four years ago. It's so nice to write for you all again.
