Youngjae wasn't quick enough to remove his hand from Jaebum's pocket as his dad's shocked gaze turned to disgust.
"So this is why you wanted to move out so bad huh? So you can-"
"Honey that's enough," his mother interrupted.
"I missed you sweetie, how have you been?" she came closer and gave him a hug.
"I've been good mom, how come you're here? ...You should have called at least," Youngjae whispered under his breath.
His father's disgusted gaze still on him. Such a strong gaze that it felt like his eyes were burning a hole through his skull.
He had never really had a great relationship with his dad. It was always hard for them to get along since his father started arguments and fights over any of his life choices. He never approved of anything Youngjae wanted to do. Especially his art. The art that was so important to him. Nothing Youngjae did would make him happy or proud of him.
"I wanted to surprise you sweetie," his mother smiled, squeezing his cheeks.
Jaebum stood there awkwardly. He didn't know what to say or do. These were Youngjae's parents. And by the look of it, he knew that his father did not like him, even though this was the first time they were meeting. He got a strong negative vibe and continued to look down at his feet.
"So is this your roommate?" his mother asked smiling over at Jaebum.
He finally looked up and nodded. "I am Im Jaebum, its nice to meet you ma'am," he extended his hand over to her but instead was greeted with a warm hug.It was weird, and he froze into place. Memories of his own mother came crashing back as he stayed still stiffly in her arms.
A mother's hug.
Something he hasn't felt in years. And in that moment as she slowly moved away, he smiled brightly at her.
They entered their door, and Youngjae sighed as he realized the living room was a mess.
"This is why I came. I knew you guys would need a mother to clean up a bit around here," she laughed. "Boys will be boys."
"You were never good at looking after yourself, always needing your mother to clean up after your messes," his father sighed.
And there it was. Once again, his father had to disapprove of anything he could find.
"Actually Youngjae is the cleanest person ever. Most of this is my mess," Jaebum spoke back without hesitation.
Youngjae looked over at him with worried brows. Jaebum brushed it off and smiled at his father.
"You could go ahead and compare our bedrooms and you'll see that your son is very organized and can take care of himself quite well," he continued ignoring the man's confused and offended facial expression.
He felt at ease when he noticed Youngjae's mother's smile.
His father went to check the rooms as Jaebum had told him.
"Your father is just worried for you that's all," his mother whispered as she continued to tiddy up the place.
They all later sat on the couch as his mother asked him about school and such.
His father stayed quiet. Glaring at them from time to time.
His mother had sat a bag on the table when she had first arrived and went over to open it. As Youngjae had guessed, it was a bunch of containers of different food and side dishes.
"I know how much you love these, and its been awhile since you've ate your mother's food, so this should be enough to fill you guys up for a couple of days," she said as she began placing them in the fridge.
"You didn't have to-" he paused as Jaebum got up and walked over to help her.
"Thank you, we really appreciate it."
Youngjae smiled to himself and his father coughed.
"So... is this your boyfriend?" he blurted out.
Youngjae's smile quickly faded and all three of them paused.
"W-what?" that's all Youngjae could mutter at the moment.
"Was I not clear enough? Is he your boyfriend?" he repeating himself more angrily this time.
He looked at Jaebum and he could see that he wanted to say something, to deny it in order to not disappoint Youngjae's father.
But no matter what he did, his father was never happy so he didn't care and stood up fearlessly.
"Yes, he's my boyfriend," he admitted proudly.
His father stood up and flung himself at him only to be stopped by Jaebum's hand on his chest. Youngjae's mother quickly ran to Youngjae's side.
"Don't you dare lay a finger on him," Jaebum warned, staring straight at the man's dark eyes. His grasp tightened as he grabbed a fist of his shirt.
"I didn't raise you to become a fucking fag!" he yelled over Jaebum's shoulder angrily, trying to escape his grasp.
"Y-you didn't raise me at all! You never cared for me. . .and my life no longer concerns you!" Youngjae yelled back, tears welling in his eyes.
Jaebum turned towards him and his heart ached at the sight of Youngjae breaking down.
"GET OUT!" Youngjae screamed.
His father lividly pushed past Jaebum and slammed the door behind him.
He watched as Youngjae's mother took him in her arms and apologized over and over.
Jaebum stood there, unsure of what to do. Seeing Youngjae like this broke his heart. She wiped his tears and motioned for Jaebum to come over.
She looked at them both and smiled, taking one of their hands in hers.
"I'm sorry about that...I just want you to know that I am very thankful that Youngjae has found someone that makes him happy," a tear ran down her cheek. "The way you protected him just now shows just how much you care for him."
"I will continue to protect him for the rest of my life," he confessed.
Youngjae smiled through his tears, "Thank you mom for being so understanding."
"Of course, seeing you happy makes me happy...And don't worry about your father, I'll go have a talk with him."
She kissed them both on the head and left.
__
"Are you alright?" Jaebum asked cautiously as they sat next to each other on the floor.
Youngjae looked up at him and began to cry once again.
Jaebum's heart broke into a million pieces. "Please don't cry," his voice broke.
Youngjae threw his arms around his neck and hugged him tightly, surprising him.
"These are tears of happiness," he whispered in his neck, ". . .you're the only one who has stood up to my father like that just to protect me."
Jaebum calmed down at his words and hugged him back tightly.
They stayed like that for a while. Embraced in each others warmth and comfort.
As they let go of each other, they still stayed close. Not wanting to be apart.
"I will always protect you, from anything that dares to try and harm you."
Youngjae frowned. He was thankful to him, but at the same time he was also worried. He didn't want Jaebum getting hurt because of him. "Why would you take such a risk just for me?"
"Because, I love you."
