I squealed loudly, taking off down the yard. Adam, my boyfriend of four years, smirked, chasing after me. Considering I was one of the slowest people alive, he caught up to me quickly, wrapping his arms around my waist to prevent my escape.
"Gotcha." he whispered in my ear, pressing a kiss to my temple.
"Alright you win," I rolled my eyes. "Smartass."
"And my prize?" he licked his lips suggestively, slipping his hands underneath my shirt.
"What prize?" I replied, kissing his lips swiftly before dashing off again. I stood in the middle of the road defiantly, folding my arms for emphasis.
"Y/N, come over here." he said, his tone low. Yea, right. If he was trying to seduce me, it wasn't working.
"And why should I?"
"Y/N, please, just come here." he repeated, fear clouding his expression. I rolled my eyes at him. Acting innocent wasn't going to work this time.
"You're going to have to do better than that." I laughed.
"Y/N LOOK OUT!" Adam screamed, shoving me onto the sidewalk. Pain coursed through my body as I came into contact with stone, my head spinning. What the hell just happened? Looking back at Adam, my blood ran cold.
"ADAM!" I screeched, rushing to his side at once. He lay in the middle of the street, blood spilling from his chest. He coughed, sputtering up even more of the putrid red liquid. On the corner of the block, a black Sudan was parked messily.
He'd gotten hit. Adam pushed me out of the way and got hit. "No," I choked, cradling his head against my chest. "You're gonna be okay, Adam, I promise."
"I couldn't let you get hurt-" he wheezed.
"I know, baby, I know." I soothed, placing wet kisses all over his face and head. The ringing of sirens echoed from somewhere down the street, and I noticed a girl standing outside the car, horror written all over her face.
"Oh my gods, I'm so sorry!" she broke down, tears gushing from her eyes.
"It's not your fault." I assured her. It's mine. I shouldn't have been standing in the street. If Adam dies, it will be my fault. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the ambulance pull up beside the Sudan as paramedics rushed to Adam's side.
"We need to get this guy to the hospital ASAP!" one of the men shouted. "He'll die if not treated!"
"No!" I screamed, sobbing frantically as they put him on a gurney and wheeled him into the truck. He can't die, I won't let him. Stay with me, Adam, please.
. . . . . . . . . . . .
I hugged my knees to my chest, watching the steady rising and falling of Adam's chest, knowing with a cold fear that it could stop at any minute. After being brought to the hospital, he'd been diagnosed with four broken ribs and a fractured spinal cord. The doctors didn't know whether he would live or not.
Looking at him, I wished it were me in that bed instead of him. He didn't deserve to be here. Not like this. I was the damn idiot who stood in the middle of the road. "Why am I so fucked up?!" I screamed, throwing my head back against the wall.
"You're not fucked up." a voice cracked from beside me. I looked over to Adam, relief and happiness flooding through me when I saw he was awake.
"Adam..." I whimpered, throwing my arms around his neck. "I'm sorry. Sorry for everything. You shouldn't be here. Why did you get in the way of that car?" I rambled. Adam smirked, pressing his lips to mine mid-sentence.
When we pulled away he cupped my face gently, kissing my forehead. "None of this is your fault," he told me. "I couldn't let you get hurt. I love you, Y/N."
"I love you, too, Adam." I whispered, smiling widely. Sliding over, he patted the bed beside him, gesturing for me to lay down.
"I can't," I told him. "I'll hurt you."
"Just get in the fucking bed, Y/N," he rolled his eyes. Scowling at him playfully, I hopped onto the bed, nuzzling my face into his neck while he wrapped his arms around my waist. "So when do you think they'll let me out?" he mused.
"Adam, everyone out there is convinced your dead," I told him. "The girl who hit you nearly had a heart attack. Twice."
"Well, I am most certainly not dead," he grinned. "I couldn't die. I had to be strong. For you. I can't imagine a world without you, Y/N. Hell, I don't want a world without you, Y/N."
"Neither do I." I said, kissing him passionately. When we broke apart I rested my forehead against his, my fingers toying with the hair at the nape of his neck.
"I love you." he whispered, resting his chin on top of my head. I sighed with content, burrowing into his hospital gown clad chest.
"I love you, too, Adam."
