inspired by Lorde's song "Buzzcut Season."  this piece has a completely different interpretation of what "buzzcut season" is. also, i haven't written poetry in so long, and it is evident here!

buzzcut season

i love it when your head catches flame

your thoughts become ideas become words become campaigns

we fed you wood and sticks and pain

and you drank gasoline to take yourself away

we wished you'd stay the same

but a fire is never meant to be tame

there were explosions on tv

we didn't care where were the new episodes on the screen

and you inhaled our fumes but we saw you inflate

like the smoke was filling your body like a balloon

and while we cried for the missing season

you cried with the man on the news

there were gunshots on tv

and this time we were high in our fantasies

you popped our balloons and screamed

we are not living in a dream

but we are like goldfish in a pool

never caring for more beyond our worlds

gods with golden ichor, we float like helium

shut out the tragedies, why should we care

safety came with ignorance and

ignorance was our veins

there were woman on the march

and we stayed home feasting by the lot

humans are made up only mouths and teeth

after all, tongue dead and gone

and while your voice tore through the ground

our gossip bounced on the walls

there was something beyond these barriers

but no one cared at all

for buzzcut season was on its way

and the tongue helium inside our cheeks

beer sizzling in our veins

ignorant we would stay

and ignorances knitting our bones

buzzcut season and you missed it

we felt razors in our brains

scraping the insides clean and we felt not a thing

silky fabrics and dating drama banged around in our skulls

and the truth, the world out there we had never suffered

who cares when there's nothing more than the fun and you

the helium burning your lungs,

the beer sizzling in your bones,

ignorance taking you higher than godhood would ever do

buzzcut season and you missed it:

we saw your head catch flame

and it sparked in your tear ducts

and burned bullets down your cheek

we watched it wind down your hair and caress your brain

and gosh, was that so unfashionable at this age and day

and we watched you scream and scream and scream

about the things that the tv screen seemed not to see

buzzcut season could not touch you, the razor melted

in your flames

buzzcut season had done its thing

but your head still caught flame

sparks and fire in the spaces between

i loved it when your head caught flame

you could be something we could never be.
