Chapter 7: North Florida Navy Installation on FNS New World (Carter Edwards III)
We were assigned to the Florida Navy Ship, New World. It was an old naval battle ship. We had one small cabin beneath the water level. It had a bunk bed and a dresser. Our job was to keep the guns maintained. But, most of the time we sat in our cabin. That was, until one day I felt the ship moving. I heard the engines moving. We ran to the deck. People were gathered around a radio.
I heard it saying,"This is King Joel Hixon of the Southern Republic. If you do not want war, I will be in Miami by sunrise tomorrow. You can sign a surrender agreement. Hixon, out."
We were going to Miami.
