It was much colder up in the mountains than they were used to. The summer elsewhere had lasted for three years and Alec had forgotten what it was to be cold. Yet here they were clambering along craggy rock while icy wind cut them and snowy peaks watched from high above. It made Alec wish for Flint despite his aversion to fire but the creature had left them when they departed from Salem's lair.
They instead opted to travel by the snuff's teleportation. She knew which way to go since she was the one tracking Alec's brother. All she needed was a drop of the leshy's blood and she was off like a shot. She excelled here in the mountain, her soft mottled fur kept her toasty warm and her hooves allowed her to scamper over the terrain with ease. She was delighted by the occasional patch of snow they found and would roll in it squealing in delight as she did so.
She took them to a chain of mountains. Off in the distance Alec spotted the palewood from his dream and knew that they were in the right place. As for which mountain it was it seemed obvious. A gargantuan, black peak rose up in the centre dwarfing its fellow giants. It gave off a dark aura that frightened Fai and Phoebe, they sensed lots of death in the place. However to Alec it felt completely foreign and strangely familiar at the same time, it was also giving him strange deja vu.
Alec stopped suddenly and regarded the snuff with concern. "I'm very sorry my creation I feel I have done you a disservice," Alec said in the snuff language with a frown. The creature cocked her head with a look of confusion making her look even more like a dog.
"Why is that?"
"I never named you but I will put that right." Alec informed her. Although he had named Fern and perhaps it was time to give someone else a chance.
"Fai," he called and the boy who was peering round the next corner turned around with a hmm in answer. "Would you like to name the snuff she shouldn't have gone this long without one and I feel you can choose one eloquent enough. I created her and named the species so I need a second perspective for her individual name." He justified the naming in this way because he didn't want the snuff to feel cheated. However he wanted to please Fai who was still recovering from his PTSD that Salem's lair triggered.
The illuceo smiled and considered it. "How about Narla," he asked shyly but with a hopeful look. The snuff pricked her ears and the tufts perked up with them.
"I like that," she said to Alec. "Especially since it came from one who means so much to you," she said and Alec could hear the amusement in her raspy voice. Alec nodded to Fai who grinned broadly and ruffled Narla's fur happily.
They continued on up through the mountain happily enough. Narla led them with her nose glued firmly to the ground as she traced the scent trails of Alec's lost kin. All the while Alec could feel the glee from the owner of the voice in his head and he was pondering what that meant when he heard something behind him. A chill went up his spine and the hairs on his arms stood on end.
He whirled around to find nothing but when he continued to walk he saw a flash of movement in the corner of his eye. He sped up to catch up to Phoebe, Fern and Narla all of which were ahead of him and unaware of the phantom following them. "Guys something's here," he shouted his eyes wide trying to catch sight of the thing.
Narla scampered over to him and scented the air as since she hadn't smelled it coming the thing was likely downwind of them. A strange noise came from the back of her throat and her ears twitched nervously, everything about her demeaner screamed fear. "What do you smell," the leshy asked knowing he wouldn't like the answer.
"Death...death and rage," she whimpered moving closer to him for protection. That's when it appeared. A monster covered in wiry brown hair. It was skeletal, wreaked of death and prowled like a big cat. It's gaping mouth with its a purple lolling tongue was the only thing distraction from its fangs and tusks. This was the thing that had attacked him the first night away from the castors. The thing that Fai had saved him from...one of the ravenous.
"Run," Alec whispered and without a second's delay they all shot off like hares. It was a strange urge, the drive to flee from something threatening especially for Alec. His abilities should have made him fearless of the beast, he should have been able to control it even. However everything about it seemed wrong to Alec and it inspired fear in him like nothing else ever had. He's rather face a thousand flaming serpents at that moment than the one creature hunting him down like he was mere cattle. He had no confidence that he could deter it in any way and so running seemed the only logical solution.
Fai was at the head of the group, then Narla, then Alec and finally Phoebe. Fai was concerned for the witch but as he looked back he noticed that the ravenous had eyes only for Alec. It pushed itself further and faster in aid only to spur on the leshy further. What surprised Fai most was the beats closed mouth, hiding its fangs and retracted its claws which should surely have been extended ready to sink into Alec's flesh.
Just when Alec felt like he could run no more he spotted a cave ahead. "The cave, into cave," he panted and Fai turned and nodded before speeding inside. They all tumbled inside and for some reason the ravenous beast stopped at the door before slinking off with an odd look of satisfaction.
Once Alec had caught his breath he looked at his surroundings warily. There in the centre of the cave stood a boy who was grinning smugly. Everything about his look reflected Alec's but in a softer way. Where Alec was more handsome this boy was beautiful giving off a comforting aura which was already causing Phoebe and Fai to gravitate towards him. His features were softer and somehow kinder looking making him more innocent looking. The only differences in appearance were his large grey eyes the colour of storm clouds which sharply contrasted Alec's grass green ones. He was also slightly shorter than Alec and thinner likely what came of living in a cave.
A broad grin spread across the boys face and he crossed his arms over his chest in a move that said I won and you didn't even know you were playing. "Hello brother," he said in a voice that matched exactly the soft, dangerous one that had been whispering into his mind for weeks.
