09 || Coyotes and First Kisses

Suddenly, howling started and put them all out of their slumber.

"Oh, my god," Vern said terrified.

"It's that Brower kid. His ghost is out walking in the woods." Teddy said, scaring Vern.

"No," Kaitlyn said, "Vern don't listen to him."

"Oh," Vern whimpered, "I promise I won't hawk no more dirty books. I promise I won't say no more bad swears. I promise I'll eat all my lima beans.'

Teddy tapped Vern's shoulder, making him gasp and flinch, "two for flinching." He punched Vern in the arm twice.

Chris took out the gun and held it up.

"What is it, Chris?" Gordie asked.

"Maybe it's coyotes," Chris answered.

"Sounds like a woman screaming," Gordie replied.

"It's not coyotes," Teddy said. "It's his ghost."

"Oh, don't say that," Vern begged.

Teddy stood up and walked away a little bit.

"Hey, Teddy, sit down," Chris said to the boy.

"I'm gonna go look for it. I want to see the ghost," He replied.

"Don't say that," Vern begged again.

"I just want to see it. I just want to see what he looks like," Teddy replied walking farther away.

The howling got much louder and it sounds much closer. Kaitlyn fell back into Chris as Ella did to Gordie. Even Teddy fell, muttering a string of curse words while doing it.

"Guys, calm down," Kaitlyn said. "It's just wolves or coyotes."

"Just wolves?!" Vern asked scared.

Kaitlyn sat up and leaned off of Chris, "that's why we have a gun. And we can climb trees."

"Climb trees," Teddy mocked in a hushed tone.

Vern looked at her scared and then moved his eyes to Chris, "maybe we should stand guard."

"Yeah," Chris agreed. "That's a good idea."
