"Passengers, prepare for take off."
"Finally," Kai groans, too loudly, from next to me, earning a few annoyed looks from nearby passengers and the flight attendant strolling through the aisles.
"Shhh," I whisper to him. He rolls his eyes, leaning his head against the window to watch the plane move away from the airport.
The two of us bickered in the terminal about who was going to get the window seat. Kai even tried to offer sex to sway me, but I still insisted that I was gonna get the seat whether he likes it or not. And, well, needless to say, Kai beat me to it in a very ungentlemanly manner of knocking me to the side with his shoulder so he could speed down the aisle.
"I wanted the window seat," I mumble and he laughs.
"Too bad, I beat you to it fair and square."
"Pushing me so you could go down the aisle first was not fair and square," I argue and he merely waves a hand in response.
I rest my head against his shoulder, partly because it allows me to get a better look at the view outside as the plane rushes faster down the runway. And partly because the exhaustion induced by the lack of sleep I got last night starts to catch up with me. Sleeping proved to be an impossible task when all I could think about was the weekend that awaited me and the witch that I was going to be spending it with. But anticipation wasn't the only thing stirring up my restlessness.
I'm, admittedly, nervous. The thought of being within Joshua Parker's vicinity did an efficient job in shoving away any excitement I had regarding the trip. It's not only the fact that he tried to kill me that has me on edge; it's Kai I'm worried about. What if something happens to him?
My eyes trail up to his face in worry. His features are relaxed as he stares out the window, face illuminated by rays of the late afternoon sun.
The plane eventually takes off into the sky but I continue to keep my gaze trained on Kai, who's smiling slightly as he observes the buildings getting smaller and smaller beneath us.
"Not bad," he comments. "But I think my flying skills are better."
He looks down at me, smirking but it slowly fades when he notices me already staring at him with a lack of humor in my expression.
"Charlie," he says, frowning. "What's wrong?"
I close my eyes, shaking my head and adjust my head on his shoulder, attempting to get comfortable.
"Nope," he shifts so my head falls off his shoulder and a whine leaves my lips. "You don't get to sleep until you tell me whatever it is that's on your mind."
I exhale in defeat, reluctantly meeting his scrutinizing eyes. "I'm worried, Kai."
He arches an eyebrow. "About?"
About you.
"This weekend," I tell him. "I don't know what's going to happen and Joshua is going to be there and your coven–"
"Charlie," he cuts me off. "You're going to be fine."
No, I want to yell at him, you're not getting it. It's not necessarily my own wellbeing that induces the unease inside of me. "But what about you?"
Kai chuckles, ducking his head down to place a kiss on my lips. The kiss aids in soothing my nerves, allowing me to focus on his lips moving against mine rather than the various worst-case-scenarios that could occur this weekend. And it makes me acutely aware of the stubble littered over his upper lip and chin. He slowly pulls away and my eyes flutter open to find his inches away.
