Will and Squirt collapsed behind some trees where Halt couldn't see them. They let the wood they were carrying fall out of their hands and they just lay on the ground groan from their aching muscles.
"Halt is an evil little twirp!" Squirt managed to groan out and Will groaned in agreement. They lay there just groaning for a few minutes until both their muscles started to stiffen up and they quickly stood up and shook their arms and legs to keep them loose. While they were doing this Will couldn't hold in his curiosity any longer
"How are you so comfortable talking to Halt?" He asked then before Squirt could answer he blurted out a few more questions "better yet who are you? Did you know this was going to happen? Do you know Halt? How di-" Squiry cut him off
"Whoa, whoa, whoa can you give me some time to answer?" She said. It wasn't really a question for him to answer it was more like a sarcastically comment. "Are you always like this?" She asked and Will eyed her suspiciously
"I asked you first" he said and Squirt nodded
"I guess fair's fair" she said "Ok where do I begin..."

Halt was sitting on his verandah when he saw Will and Squirt appear from the trees carrying wood. He knew they were hiding from him to rest and from the amount of time they had spent there, their muscles must have stiffened up but the way they were walking confirmed that they must have walked and shook their muscles to stop them from stiffening. When they got closer he saw that Will had a shocked, dumb found look on his face. When they got to the steps to walk up to the verandah that led to the shack Halt spoke
"Have a nice rest did we?" He asked Will looked up from the groans and his shocked facial expression turned more into a shell shocked expression
"You!" He said "And her" he said and Halt understood why he was so shocked
"So you told him" Halt said and Squirt nodded and went into the shack as Will went to follow Halt gestured for him to stay
"Will come here for a moment can you?" He said, Will nodded and laid the wood on the verandah and and sat on a chair next toHalt's. Halt sighed
"Don't get angry or scared of Squirt ok?" He said and Halt saw a question forming on Will's lips, he put a hand to stop him mowing what it was going to be "Squirt is what I call her since she doesn't have one" he said "but we're getting off the subject. Don't stop being her friend" Will stunned that Halt would say such a thing shook his head aggressively
"No, no I won't do such a thing" he said quickly to reassure him Halt nodded approvingly
"Good, you know she's grown quite fond of you" Will look surprised
"Me?" He said and Halt nodded again
"Yep, I couldn't stop her talking about you the other night" Will smiled
"Really?" He asked, but then his smile wiped away "Is that why you chose me for a ranger apprentice" Halt shook his head
"No I chose you a long time ago" he said, Halt sighed "Ok well when your finished putting that wood away you can come and rest, a ranger apprentice doesn't really do housework, I was pulling your leg" he said and Will looked sad
"Oh....well that's embarrassing" Will said and Halt nudged him,
"Don't take it to heart I do it to everyone" he said and Will picked up the wood and as Will was about to open the door to enter the shack Halt stopped him
"Oh and Will" he said "Don't tell Squirt that I told you she was quite fond of you" Will smiled and nodded
"I won't" he said and went into the cabin. Once Will stacked the wood and went back out side, as he walked out he heard Halt talking to himself
"That's strange" Halt said
"Anything wrong?" Will asked and Halt gestured for Will to come and sit. They talked for about half an hour before Squirt came
"Do you want dinner ready?" She asked "Or do you want you ranger apprentices to do more house work?" She said Will smiled and Halt shook his head
"Squirt the joke is over he knows" Halt said and Squirt laughed
"Well thank god for that!" She said
"Will do you know how to cook?" Halt asked. Will hesitated
"Um...eh.... Well....no..." He said, then Halt stood up
"Well come on I'll teach you" he said and all three of them cooked dinner.
