"Timmy"
"Alexx?"
"Where are you?"
"Just finished my patrol. Why?"
"There's been an accident on the highway. We've got 23 bodies on the way...I need all my crew here."
"...sure. I need to change into my own clothes.be there in 20 minutes ok?"
"Thank you. I know you're tired."
"Wasn't so bad today"
"Yes I've heard about yesterday.
Sorry for you".
"I'm fine. See you soon."
I changed my uniform into jeans and longsleeves and rushed into the morgue.
Outside there were a lot of cars, both county cars and some other.
Inside was hell.
Alexx passed me some probes and I started working. I had 3 bodies to process- two men and a girl of 16, maybe 17.
"Man, it's hell"- said John, a dayshiftworker.
"Yeah so I see... Need help?"
"No, I have my own three, like any of us, so that will be a looong day.."
About 10 pm I had a call from Courtney.
"Where are you Tim???"
"I'm at work babe. "
"At patrol? "
"No, in the morgue."
"But..."
"I know we were to eat dinner together but Alexx asked me for this. I couldn't say no."
"But you could just call me"
"I'm sorry I know. I've been working for many hours and still got a lot to go. There's been an accident, 27 dead, many wounded."
"I've heard. I'm to go to the scene to collect evidence."
"Oh...any sign of a crime?"
"Maybe... I don't know. "
"Drop by if you finish your work".
I finished talking and got to work.When I finished Alexx came.
"Timmy it's late... Maybe you should go home."
"I can't sleep Alexx...and I don't think it's the end, do you?"
"No... We've got 5 more from the city. Three people already went home. Go home, Tim"
"You're going home?"

"So I'm staying too."
"But when you'll be tired, have some sleep in my office,Ok?"

I worked until 3 am. Then I gave up. Went to Alexx's office and died on the sofa.
At 3.30 Courtney came
"Dr Woods? Dr Woods?" She said whispering
"Ms Walsh?"
"Call me Courtney."
"Ok, Courtney."
" Came for the samples. Is Speed still here?"
"Asleep. Worked until 3 but he gave up. Here are your samples."
"Will you tell him that I came?"
"Yeah. "
"Ok. See you later."
"Courtney...wait."
She turned around" ...yeah?"
"I know I shouldnt interrupt but... be good to him. He sufferred enough. And he engages very fast indeed. "
"Why do you think I'll hurt him? Why do you all judge me so easily?" She said sadly

The telephone rang and I woke up not knowing where I actually am." Hello?"
"Speed?"
"Henry?"
"Yep. Are you awake?"
"Kind of. What time is it?"
"5. "
"So...why are you calling me? I start at 2 pm"
"We traced him"
"Who?"
"Andrew. Courtney's ex."
"What?? Where???"
"It turns out one of the victims of this accident.... was his wife".
"Wife?"
"Yep. "

"Not anymore. We need him to identify the body."
"He's coming here?"
"No possibility to omit that as there are no other family members near here."
"Is he coming?"

"Will you arrest him??"

"There hasn't been any court case and he still has a witness status."
"But he didn't show up."
"No. So he will....if Courtney accuses him of an assault. It's obvious she will!"
"Not so obvious. She looks scared. I'm not sure if she does that."

I run to Alexx's office.
"I need to go, Alexx. Give me an hour."
"What happened?".
"I'll tell you later, Ok?"
"Go. An hour, Tim. "
I went straight to the lab.
"Hi Paula. Is Courtney here?"
"Yes. At trace. Stop, Speed. Visitor's pass."
I got my pass and went straight there. She was bending over the microscope.
"Court, you need to sue him."
"Good morning Speed."
"Hi. You need to, hear me?"
"I don't know. I'm not ready yet".
"He can disappear again. It's the only chance for trial."
"He's just lost his wife for God's sake!"
"You don't remember what he's done to you? You almost died!!!! Are you mad?"
"Stop pushing me! It's my case isn't it? So back off!!!"
"What? You want this again?"
"He's probably changed. "
"Yeah, sure. Come on Courtney... Don't be stupid!!!!"
"Go away Speed! Leave me alone, will ya?"
"Yeah I will. But don't fucking call me if he appears at your door again!!!!!" I stormed out and shut the door.
I went to see Henry.
"She's not gonna charge him, do you believe?"
"Told ya."
"I don't believe it...she's stupid or something?"
"She's afraid, Speed. I guess."
"When is he coming?"
"Today, about 1 pm. Straight to the morgue."
"I have to be there. "
"I'll come with you. I know him. And I know you, don't want you to lose your job. "
"Ok. See you there. "
I called H.
"H. we need to talk. "
"About?"
"Andrew. Did you hear?"
"Yeah. Keep out of this. "
"I can't. Do you know she won't charge him??!"
"Calm down."
"How can I? He almost killed her. Isn't it the authomatically a court case? He assaulted a police officer!!!"
"She wasn't on duty then"
"Oh, come on !"
"That's the law. He will be questioned of course."
"I wanna be there. "
"On which basis? You're not a detective. Not a CSI checking the evidence in that case. No basis."
"Can I watch?"
"I don't think it's good idea."
"So you won't help me?"
"It's not help. You're not objective in this here. Go home and rest."
"Thanks, H. Thanks a lot." I left.
I drank 3 cups of coffee until 1p.m. came. Wore my uniform, took my badge and gun.
When I appeared at the morgue Alexx looked at me and said "not a good idea Timmy. "
"I need to, Alexx. Need to. I won't say anything. Just let me be here as an officer. "
"Ok. But behave. Even if he did this to Courtney, he's a victim's husband. He comes to identify his wife's body."
"Ok. "
At 1 pm there came a guy followed by Henry, who nodded me so I realized this was him.
I observed the man who almost killed my girlfriend. I wanted to punch him in the face, but couldn't. He was tall and handsome, but looked broken. Alexx showed him the body and he nodded. Then went outside the room and sat in the hall, waiting for the death certificate.
I just couldn't resist to approach him. I saw Henry shaking his head when I did this.
"Mr Martins"
"Yes?" He looked at me
"I'm sorry for your loss. This woman didn't deserve it...but you did."
He looked puzzled.
"....for what you did to Courtney. And I swear I'll do anything to bring you to court for this."
He looked shocked." ... And you are..?"
"Doesn't matter. I'm just a police officer who wants justice."
"Yeah, sure. Nobody will call me guilty. There are no evidence. This conversation is over".
He stood up and I realized he was the same height as me. "Speedle!!" I've heard H.'s voice. "Please come over."
I went to him unwillingly.
"Stop it Tim, what are you doing?" He whispered "Go inside."
"No. Someone has to do something."
"I'll suspend you if you don't."
"You're not my boss anymore...."
I looked at Martins again. He was observing me with the crooked smile.
"We'll meet again" I said.
"I'm sure, Speedle... I' m sure"
