“Let me get this straight,” Gabrielle's gaze traveled from Jeanie to Bernard and back to Jeanie. “You're not really engaged?”

Jeanie sighed and nodded for the umpteenth time.

“But you're in love?” She asked, confusion written plainly on her face as her gaze continued to travel back and forth Jeanie and Bernard.

Standing before her mother who was seated on the couch, Jeanie couldn't help but think every time her mother's eyes came to rest on her, they held accusation in them.

“Yes.” Bernard answered from his standing position beside Jeanie.

They both stood before Gabrielle like two school children being scolded for misconduct.

“Bernard, dear love, does this by any chance have anything to do with Jeanie's snoring?” Gabrielle asked and Jeanie huffed. “Or her drooling? Does she still have that terrible habit of picking her nose...”

“Mum!” Jeanie half yelled, embarrassed. “We explained it to you already! Our relationship started out as fake...”

“I find that difficult to believe.” Gabrielle said, cutting off Jeanie's flow of words. “Is this your attempt at calling off the engagement but making it seem like it's no big deal because you two still love each other?” Jeanie couldn't help but think her mother was on the verge of tears. Gabrielle rose to her feet and held Bernard's face captive. “Please tell me you're not trying to break off your engagement.” Her eyes pleaded.

Bernard smiled. Jeanie could never understand his ability not only to earn her mother's love, but to love her mother in return.

“I'm crazy in love with your daughter, Gabrielle and right now, that's all that matters.” He answered simply.

Gabrielle sighed. Jeanie knew her mother was most definitely wasn't satisfied with Bernard's answer but she seemed willing to accept it.

“I'll just cancel the appointment with the florist I guess... And the baker...” She heaved a loud breath. “... And the caterer... And then there's the band... The pastor... The church...” She turned and began making her way to the kitchen. “...There's the zoo keeper as well...”

Jeanie didn't even want to find out what her mother intended to do with a zoo keeper and a wedding or why her mother had gone ahead to plan an entire wedding without her knowledge.

She felt something touch her hand and immediately glanced up to find Bernard smiling down at her. Jeanie returned his smile, still amazed she got to keep the hot guy. For a brief second, she wished she was back in High School, shoving in everybody's face the fact that the school's geek gets to keep the popular guy. And while she wasn't in High School any more, she was still excited her old bullies most likely already knew of her relationship with Bernard considering it was on every Entertainment news.

“I think your mother took the news better than was expected.” He grinned.

Jeanie huffed. “I'm just thankful I won't be needing the services of a zoo keeper any time soon.”

Bernard nodded. “Now that we have that off our necks, I must head to the office.” He pulled her close and kissed her.

“Hmmm.” She smiled and smacked her lips together. “Alright then, I'll see you later, handsome.”

Bernard left that morning, leaving Jeanie alone to console her mother who seemed to be taking the news of her daughter's nonexistent wedding, badly. It almost seemed like with every second that ticked by, the implications of Jeanie and Bernard's announcement, sank further into Gabrielle.

Jeanie had emptied the glass of wine into a now drunk Gabrielle's cup, in a failed attempt to calm her hysterical nerves, when the door bell rang.

Thankful for the distraction, Jeanie sprang to her feet and hurried to the door. She pressed the button on the intercom, “Who is it?”

“Jeanie, it's me, Stacey.”

For a brief second, Jeanie closed her eyes, knowing fully well that her day was about to get worse.
