"If the soul is left in darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness."
― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

"Then what did you do?" Gracie demanded excitedly as I recounted the story of Reggie and Archie fighting.

I scoffed, "Gracie, have I not taught you anything?"

Gracie scrunched up her nose in confusion.

"You can prevent a fight from happening," I told her as we both sat on the bar stools at the kitchen bench, one spoon in her hand and one in mine as we shared a tub of cookies and cream ice-cream, "but you can't stop a fight while happening. You'll end up with a bruised face and a possible bruised heart," I said, scooping up some ice-cream into my mouth.

The memory of Reggie and Richie fighting in seventh grade came to mind. I couldn't remember what they were fighting about, in fact, I was sure it started from a couple of small playful shoves that turned into serious hits. I had obliviously tried to intervene, screaming at them 'enough' about a hundred times only to end up fighting with them when they wouldn't stop. I punched Reggie but ended up hurting myself more than him. The fight stopped when they realized that I had hurt myself.
