It was Christmas Eve.  A thick layer of snow buried London and frost decorated the windows ledges and roofs of the city. Lights shone from the street through the window, flashing and winking tauntingly while they illuminated groups of cheerful carollers and last minute shoppers. The distant melody of Christmas music invaded the room, vocalists sounding mocking in their seasonal cheer.

All this festivity flooded the city, filling homes and hearts with joy. But there was one place left cold and dark, none of the happiness able to seep in to the lonely apartment. Lena Oxton, the usually-chipper ray of sunshine who would normally revel in the intoxicating festive spirit, sat alone in her living room. She had refused the invitation to her work Christmas Eve party in favour of lying on her sofa in the dark, staring blankly at the painfully bright TV screen. Winston, her closest friend, had pretended not to sound too disappointed over the phone but everyone knew it wouldn't be half as fun without her. Even her boss, a harsh and fairly cranky man named Jack Morrison, couldn't help but admit that Lena brought life to the company. It was safe to say that the past few weeks had been as lifeless as could be. Her heart just wasn't in it anymore. Her heart wasn't in anything anymore. Her heart had been ripped in half and trodden on, battered into the floor with a stiletto heel. She didn't feel like doing anything anymore, much less celebrating anything.

It was Christmas Eve and Lena hadn't even decorated the tree.

What made everything one hundred times worse was the constant reminders. In the corner shop, trying to buy milk and instant noodles, she couldn't help but catch the headline of a gossip magazine: "Supermodel and Dancer, Amélie Guillard, confesses relationship with Oscar Winning Actor, Gerard Lacroix." At work, the billboard outside her window had been plastered with an advert featuring the two, both dressed in red carpet worthy clothes and smiling at each other. That second, on the TV, as the chat show host dropped the bombshell.

Amélie Guillard to marry Gerard Lacroix in new year.

There it was, in big red letters at the top of the screen, the words that crushed Lena completely. She turned the TV off, silence hitting her like a tsunami and she just let the floodgates open. It was far from the first time she had cried about losing Amélie, she had been regularly for weeks now, but now it all just felt so real. This was it, past the point of no return, her ex-girlfriend had moved on completely and there was no going back. Lena knew it was inevitable but it still hurt, especially since barely a month had gone by since the two went their separate ways. She supposed it was probably better for both of them though; Amélie had obviously tried to cut things off before Lena found out about Gerard, saving them both the fight it would have caused. She was grateful for that small blessing but knowing that the Frenchwoman had been seeing the actor in secret for more than a two years made her feel like trash. It wasn't like she expected to be together forever, Amélie was too far out of her league for things to work out smoothly, however she couldn't help but tear up whenever the thought about how long she had been cheating for. More than half of their relationship had been a lie, a con,  a joke at her expense.

Her train of thought was broken by a knock on the door. It was soft, loud enough to be heard but not urgent or demanding. Looking at the red numbers that blinked on the TVs standby display, she saw that it was too late in the day for it to be a postman and she hadn't been making any noise so it couldn't be a neighbour complaining. Carollers were another option and she really wasn't in the mood to be dealing with them. Maybe if she stayed really still and quiet, they would go away. That was a solid plan, she thought to herself, still laying on her side and staring aimlessly into space.
