Peter couldn't quite pinpoint the exact moment he fell in love with her and knew she had to be his forever, quite literally. All through high school, his eyes had been set on her and they never left. Even after graduation, he was still completely smitten with her.
Peter never knew, however, that a couple years into college she was engaged to be married to another man. One of the worst people he went to college with. So, it came as quite a heartbreaker when he finally found the courage to approach her and confess only to be told she was terribly sorry and engaged.
He was absolutely devastated but he wasn't a quitter. He spent the next few weeks calling five different states to round up all the daffodils possible. It didn't take long and soon enough he had planted them in the yard in front of her house.
It took all night but it was worth it that next morning when she opened up her window to see the sea of daffodils with him standing in the middle of them all, dressed in navy dress pants and a white dress shirt. There was a bright smile that overtook her face as she looked at him, and he couldn't help but smile widely back at her.
In what seemed to be the blink of an eye, she was running out the door to meet him. She treaded carefully through the flowers, trying not to damage them too much. She stood in front of him and a small adoring smile spread on his face when their eyes met. She pressed both of her hands together and brought her face down to her fingertips.
Her eyes scanned the flowers, the smile never leaving her face. The slight breeze blew past her in the air, ruffling the ends of her sundress and blowing bits of her hair into her face.
"Daffodils," she breathed, her eyes moving to his before looking back out at them.
"They're your favorite flower," he said without missing a beat, his eyes never leaving her face.
"How'd you get so many?" she question, her smile still planted on her lips. Peter turned his head to look out at them, before responding.
"I called everywhere in five state. I told them it was the only way to get my wife to marry me," he said, a glimmer of hope in his brown eyes. Her eyes moved around to look at the flowers again, her ears perking up at the end of his response. A slight blush spread across her cheeks.
"You don't even know me," she said, her eyes meeting his and her smile faltering.
"Then I have the rest of my life to find out," he said, complete sincerity spreading through his facial expression. She breathed a smile, her heart fluttering slightly.
"(Name)!"
The sudden call of her name, made her smile fall as she turned to look at the source of the voice. Peter followed her gaze and noticed her fiance and his friends walking down the sidewalk and towards the edge of their field of the yellow daffodils.
"It's James," she said, and Peter took note of how she moved slightly closer to him to get further away from James. "Promise you won't hurt him?
Her eyes were worried and glued on her soon-to-be husband before she turned to look at Peter.
"If that's what you want, then I swear to it."
His features had hardened and he turned to look at James.
"Pete?" James called out, a confused expression falling onto his face. He made his way through the field of flowers, carelessly stomping on them and flattening them under his weight. Peter balled his hands into fists at his sides.
"James," he sighed, angling his body more towards him. James threw his arms out to the sides, annoyed to find him talking to (Name).
"What the hell are you doing? This is my girl. Mine!" he yelled, pointing at (Name) and coming to stand in front of them. She frowned, casting a side glance at Peter. He was already looking at her, his face emotionless.
"I wasn't aware that she belonged to anyone," he stated, turning to look at James. As soon as he did, James threw his fist at him, landing a hard punch to Peter's nose. His head tilted back at the force and (Name) let out a shriek at the action, her hands flying up to her mouth. Her eyes stared at Peter as he opened his mouth, trying to stretch out his features as he went to gingerly touch his nose.
"What's the matter? You to scared to fight back?" James taunted, his eyes blazing. Peter moved his hand away from his face and looked at James.
"I promised I wouldn't," he said, his voice showing he really wanted to. James sent another punch to Peter's jaw this time, sending him falling into the daffodils. Another shriek left her mouth.
"Stop it!" she yelled, gripping her hands into fists and letting her nails dig into her palms. A worried expression fell on her face. Her hands moved to cover her mouth again as Peter rolled to his stomach and moved to stand again. James landed a kick to his stomach causing his body to lurch and fall back down.
"James! Stop!" her voice was beginning to go hoarse as tears pricked her eyes. James ignored her and instead picked Peter up, continuously throwing his knee up into his stomach. Peter groaned and pain spread throughout his body. His body fell to the ground once more and he could taste the metallic blood in his mouth.
James climbed on top of Peter and punched the side of his face causing his head to lull to the side. Peter continued to groan and take all the punches thrown at him. He was vaguely aware of James gripping the collar of his dress shirt and pulling him up to his feet. Next to them, (Name) was busy pulling the engagement ring off of her left finger.
"James!" her voice stopped James retracted fist from slamming into Peter's face again. "I will never marry you."
Her arm was outstretched towards his face, the ring held in between her fingers. His head turned to look at her, his breathing heavy and an evident look of shock on his face.
"What?" he breathed, and Peter's heart began to beat more rapidly. He was shocked but he was relieved to find he was that close to getting the girl of his dreams.
"You mean you love this guy?" James questioned and (Name) turned her head to look at him, before she turned back to James.
"He's almost a stranger and I prefer him to you," her voice was gravelly and hard. Her eyes were fierce despite her shaking hand as she continued to hold the ring out. A triumphant smile spread across Peter's face and he turned to look at James. A frown set deep into James' features as he looked at Peter, and let his fist drive into his face again.
Peter let out a huff, his body spinning slightly. A smile formed on his face again as he fell back into the field of daffodils. I did it. I did it. I did it.
James dropped his arms to his sides and looked at (Name). She moved her gaze away from Peter and thrust her hand that held the ring once more towards James. He looked at her and down to the ring before ripping it out of her hands. He stalked away, ruining the already flattened daffodils.
Peter groggily began to lift his head up when he heard him walk away. (Name) knelt beside him, her mouth drawing into a line and her eyes flooding with concern as she took in his injuries. His right eye was swollen and red, there were cuts on his forehead and left cheek and he carried a busted lip. There was a trail of blood coming from his nose as he pushed himself up onto his right elbow.
Despite his pain, he managed to give her a wide smile when he saw her face. She couldn't help but let a wide smile spread across her face as well, a quiet laugh leaving her as she stared at him. His eyes were flooded with adoration for her and he noticed the slight pink hue that spread across her cheeks.
They sat in the middle on the flattened daffodils in the middle of the field, smiling at each other. Peter felt completely triumphant in that moment. And lucky enough for them, (Name) kept the same date for her wedding, only changing the groom.
