Anna

I grabbed my keys
from my nightstand

and walked out to my car.

The crisp morning winter air

brushes against my coat

and I hug myself tight.

The white powdery thick sheet

of blinding white snow
makes me shield my eyes.

Like always,
I want to touch it.

I reach down
ignoring my grandma's calls.

"Anna! Don't f*king touch
the snow without your damn gloves on!"

her voice is an angry shriek.

I brush my bare fingers
against the hard powder
and ice meets my nerves.

I brush my fingers together
rubbing it to gather warmth.
I turn around to my mom.

"I'm heading out today," I say.

Grandma looks at me weirdly.
"Why're you always going out?
You better not be those банда жінки, gang women!

I rolled my eyes and turned
to look at my grandma in the eyes.

Her dark eyes

rimmed with shadowy bags
from work stress.
Her short silver hair

a tangle of mess.

"I'm not," I said
sticking my hands
in my coat pocket.

Grandma gives me a look
searching my face from
a couple feet away.

She doesn't have her glasses on

right now

so she might not be able
to figure out if I'm lying or not.

I still don't know
how Grandma does this.
It had always fascinated me.

I blow out a breath
and turn my entire body
to face my grandma.

"Close the door, бабуся, Grandma,"
I say loud enough

for her ancient ears to hear.
"You're gonna be cold."

Grandma lingers by the door
a little longer
in her loose pajamas.

I sigh again.
"I'm going to see my дівчина, girlfriend,"
I give my grandma a smile.

"Rose is sick."

Grandma gives me a lingering stare
before turning around into the house

and locking the door behind her.

I sigh and turn back around

to walk to my car.

I switch the car on
and the heater brings to life.
I forgot to preheat the car

so I'm basically freezing right now.

My body is bouncy

as I buckle myself
with my shaky hands.

I stare at the sky
vast blue with puffy white clouds

not to mention the blinding sun.

I pull out of the driveway

and drive to the nearest store.
I want to give Rose something
something she'll be happy to feel

when she wakes up.
