"Are they breathing?"
"I don't know. Check."
". . . This girl is but this other is slowly fading."
"And the boys?"
"One isn't breathing, but his heart is beating. The other boy is fine, but he's not awake."
"Get them in the ambulance." I felt my body being picked up and layed on some sort of hard surface and rolled into a tight space. I tried to move my head and open my eyes, but I was stuck. I couldn't move. When I, finally, opened my eyes, I saw a bright light in my face and I, quickly, closed them back. The voices that were talking, earlyer, were now mumbles and my world went black.
~
Pain. That's all I felt. Pain was shooting up and down my body and I started shaking. The air was cold and smelt like a fryer. Where was I? Mumbles were ecoing in the small space I was in. Part of me wanted to get up. To show everyone that I was okay and to show them Austin, Matt, and Nicole were okay, too. But, the other part of me, wouldn't budge. The other part of me knew that I wasn't okay. It knew that Austin, Matt and Nicole were, most likely, injured and may take a long while to get better. But, I didn't want to listen to that side anymore. Instead, I went back into the dark sleep I was in before.
~
"Should we get a nurse or something? She's moving."
"No, we should wait. She could just be having a dream."
"We don't know that. We shouldn't have let them leave."
"Hon, we can't control what happened. Neither one of us knew this would happen."
I couldn't take it anymore. I opened my eyes and squinted at the bright light above me. After my eyes ajusted, I saw two figures standing in front of me. There was a woman who had mascara smudged all over her face from crying and the man had a worried expression on his face. But, there was something about them. It seemed like I knew them from somewhere. Then, it hit me.
"Mom? Dad?" My voice was scratchy, but pleading.
"Hi, honey. How are you feeling?" My mother asked, now by my side.
"Tired. A little hungry." I coughed, but regreted it when my throat went to hurting.
"Are you in any pain?" My father clearified.
"Just my throat." I said, forcing my eyes to stay open.
"Okay. We'll go get a nurse." They started walking to the door, but a question popped into my mind.
"How are Austin, Nicole, and Matt? Are they okay?" But they didn't answer. They shared a look, and left me alone. It was cold in the room. I pulled the blanket closer to me and snuggled into my pillow, wanting to fall asleep. But, I didn't. I had some things to ask the nurse.
When the nurse came into the room, she smiled at me.
"Hi, Connie. How are you feeling?" She chirped.
"My throat hurts." I complained.
"It's the medicine." She explained.
"Are the others okay?" I asked. Her smile faded.
"The younger boy is fine, he got out two days ago, we don't know how the girl will be until she wakes up and the older boy. . . Well, he's in pretty bad shape, right now. Apparently, the truck hit his side of the car y'all were in." Everything else I blocked out. I didn't want any memories about what happened durring the crash. Austin's okay. Nicole hasn't woken up, yet. Matt's not doing well. Matt's not doing well. What's wrong with Matt?
"The older boy, what's wrong with him?" I asked.
"Well. . . We think he might be paralized." My breathing stopped. My heart dropped. My mouth flew open. I froze. Matt, my overprotective, vain, older brother may be paralized. Paralized. Matt. Paralized. This couldn't be happening. Not to me. Not to Matt. He couldn't be paralized. She had to be lieing.
"Might be? You're not sure?" I asked, harshly.
"No, we're not." She snapped. Then, another question came up.
"How long have I been here?" I asked.
"About a week, miss." She said. A week? I've been asleep a week? I will never sleep again. Well. . . Maybe.
"Why don't you get some sleep?" The nurse offered. I shook my head.
"No, I've slept enough. I want to see my brother." I ordered, crossing my arms across my chest.
"Sorry, miss. Not today." Then, she gave me a shot and all my shouts turned into slurs and I went back into a long, long sleep.
