EVAN'S POV

Sinking into the couch, Evan couldn't help but glance towards the stairs that led to the boys' rooms. Anticipation and excitement buzzed around her. She couldn't wait to see the magnificent creatures again and felt nervous at the thought of being around Cedric again. They hadn't been alone since before the incident with Christopher and the awkward tension surrounding their last walk in the woods. There was a part of her that wanted to run back up the stairs to her room and just go to bed, but the child in her couldn't help but bounce at the adventure awaiting.

She looked around at the other Hufflepuffs in the common room and couldn't help but be proud. Her house was the warmest most accepting of any of the houses, and that was reflected. There were students encouraging each other on homework, others playing board games and laughing loudly. However there was a younger student sitting at a table all by himself, so while Evan waited for Cedric, she decided it was time for her to get back to her sociable self.

Standing up, she went over and sat down next to the kid, who looked at her with what looked to be fear. "Hi! I'm Evan, what's your name?" she said, overexcited and bubbling with joy.

"I'm uhh... I'm um Henry... It's nice to meet you," he said tentatively, refusing to look up. It sounded like he had a stutter.

"What year are you? I'm a 5th year!" she pressed, refusing to give in. She remembered a time when all she wanted was to be seen, and didn't want Henry to feel that way.

"Uh, um I'm a 2nd year... Not to be rude or anything but why are you talking to me?" he replied bluntly. Instead of taking offense, Evan just laughed it off.

"I'm actually waiting for a friend but he's late and I didn't want to sit by myself and saw you sitting and wanted to introduce myself! I love your drawings by the way, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies!" she said, gesturing to the drawings of the Millennium Falcon he was trying to hide with his elbow. He moved his elbow to cover further the art from view. Refusing to give up, Evan continued.

"Which movie is your favorite? The originals are so great. Unpopular opinion, but the prequels really aren't that bad if I'm being honest," she laughed. At that, the young boy seemed to loosen up. There was a twinkle in his eye and Evan knew she had struck gold.

She broke into a smile as Henry began his rant about the undeserved hate the prequels get. She nodded along and piped in when Henry said something particularly thought provoking or enlightening.

"... but honestly Jar Jar Binks is the worst and I think he ruined the entire view of the movies! I can't believe the writers actually thought he would be a successful character..." Henry rambled on passionately, the two of them not noticing a dashing young man with caramel hair watching the two of them with a lopsided grin by the stairs.

Feeling the stare, Evan looked behind and made eye contact with Cedric. She broke into a huge grin and waved him over enthusiastically, to which he obliged.

"Cedric, I would like you to meet my new friend Henry! We were just talking about the Star Wars movies and their impact to society as a whole. Thoughts?" And for the next 20 or so minutes, Evan watched quietly as the two boys geeked out over light sabers and the possibilities of magic involved in the conception of the Force.

A yawn from Henry signaled Evan to the time and she realized they were way behind schedule, she didn't want Cedric staying out late with the first task so soon. She gently grabbed Cedric's arm as they both bid farewell to their new friend and quietly snuck out of the common rooms into the dark castle ahead.

They stealthily made it all the way to the forest without incident, something Evan was grateful for. Once they had made it to the forest, there was a building uncomfortable silence between them, so many things needing to be said but no one willing to speak. Evan just kicked her feet along and pretended not to noticed the growing tension.

A loud noise and a bright light rescued the two of them from having to say anything and made Evan's heart leap. Grinning madly, she skipped in the direction the sound had come from, with a hesitant Cedric following close behind. Making her way past some trees, she slid to a stop. Though she just saw them last night, the magnificence of the creatures still took her breath away. How could anyone ever attempt to tame such a beast? It deserved freedom.

Cedric's gasp from beside her pulled her from her thoughts

Cedric's gasp from beside her pulled her from her thoughts. She looked over at his face and somehow her smile got even bigger. The look on his face was priceless. His brown eyes reflected the fire coming from the angered dragons and his mouth was completely open, whether in shock or fear or admiration, Evan couldn't tell. She watched patiently as Cedric processed what he was seeing. She couldn't imagine what that must be like for him; to have to fight against that with only a wand. Shivers ran down her spine and she once again had that sinking feeling in her bones that she has been getting all year.

Deciding to venture further, Evan crept along the trees closer to the beasts, leaving Cedric to his thoughts. Orange and yellow flames ate up the air around her, and the shouts of the men working were drowned out whenever one of the beast bellowed.

She nearly jumped out of her skin in fright when something grabbed her shoulder, and she whipped around to see an enraptured Cedric staring back at her.

"They're so---- beautiful," he said, too awed by the creatures to elaborate, knowing it still wouldn't do them justice.

Evan merely nodded and looked once more at the creatures. As she looked, she felt the pressure of Cedric's hand slip into her own and felt her pulse quicken exponentially. A dimpled smile ghosted across her face and warmth flooded into her cheeks. Never had she been so thankful for the darkness.

Cedric squeezed gently, so she turned around to face him directly.

"Evan, I would just like to apologize for that night. I had a lovely time with you and didn't want to mess it up by being too forward and yet still ended up messing it up anyways. I just get so nervous when I'm around you and can't seem to think straight and I-" but Evan had shut him up by meeting his mouth with her own.
