《 Shifting 》

"He's gone!" I exclaimed, running back into the house.

"Give him time Diana, he almost hurt you and Marcus would never take that easily" my brother replied, looking up from his book.

I looked up at Scathach walked into the room. I glared at her. "We should leave, I can't stand it here anymore" I replied, glancing back at my brother.

He looked up again. "Your training isn't completed" he said, slowly standing up.

"You'll find that Diana can look after herself quite well" another voice said as I spun around.

Austin limped down the stairs, dressed in grey sweatpants and shirtless. "What are you doing up? You need to be healing" I said, walking over to him.

"To heal properly, I need to shift and I need to go outside to do that" he said, touching my cheek briefly.

I held out my hand and helped him down the rest of the stairs. "So what happened?" He asked as I helped him limp outside.

"I went to go speak to Marcus but he ran away" I said, shaking my head.

Austin sighed. "He really isn't helping the situation but just give him time" he said, before his eyes flashed gold.

"Stand back will you darling?" He asked as he let go of me and limped a few metres away from me.

I stood back at the door, watching Austin fall to the ground. I heard a bone snap and watched in horror as Austin's back caved in before snapping back out again.

It look torturous, watching Austin's transformation into a wolf. Every bone in his body seemed to break and shifting into something else. Hearing Austin's painful cries and pleads for it to stop almost made me run to him. But I knew better.

I closed my eyes, not wanting to see anymore. I couldn't watch him in pain. Suddenly, the noises stopped and I heard a weird sniffling noise.

I opened my eyes to find the sandy wolf standing in front of me, it's snout sniffing at me. I giggled as the wet nose touched my cheek. "Hey Austin" I said quietly.

The wolf's ears pricked forward before laying flat.  He sniffled in my ear again and I couldn't help but laugh as the air tickled my skin. Austin laid back on his hind quarters, moving his big head into my grasp.

I started to stroke his fur, rubbing behind his ears as the sandy wolf's eyes closed. "Is it better being a wolf?" I asked, causing Austin's eyes to open.

He sniffed once before turning his fluffy head to look at me properly. His golden eyes seemed to see straight through me. I looked down at my hands. "Does it hurt?" I asked, looking back up.

The wolf shook his head no before moving forward and licking my hand. I laughed and pulled away. "Ew! Austin!" I exclaimed before laughing again.

His nose nudged my shoulder. "I could make several dog jokes right now but I decided to keep them to myself" I said, pointedly.

Austin nudged my shoulder again and I looked at him. He flicked his head around to stare at the top of the hill. "Oh you want to go up there?" I asked,  getting to my feet slightly.

I started making my way up the hill and Austin bounded past me, causing me to cough out a burst of laughter. His coat shimmered in the light as he waited for me at the top. I reached the top and kneeled beside the big wolf. I raised my hand to scratch behind his ears. "Thank you Austin" I whispered into his fur

He nudged his nose against my cheek. I heard a cracking nose and crawled back as Austin transformed again, from the wolf to the man. This time it didn't seem as painful but watching Austin cry out for help was the worst. When the transformation stopped, he knelt panting on the ground, very naked.

He took a deep breath and pushed his soppy blonde hair out of his eyes. He looked up, seeing me. He smiled. "Hey" he said, grinning.

I shook my head. "You're insane, that has to hurt" I exclaimed.

He shrugged a shoulder. "I'm used to it" he replied.

My eyes drifted down before shooting up to his eyes quick. "Uh Austin, you're naked" I said before laughing.

He looked down before laughing himself. "Would you mind getting me some pants?" He asked.

I shook my head and stood up. "I'll be right back" I said, running down the hill.

I burst into the house and up the stairs, making my way to Austin's room. I searched his drawers until I found pants and I ran all the way back. I handed them to him with my eyes shielded. "Thanks" he said as I felt them slip from my grasp.

I turned my back on him to give him privacy. "You can look now" he said, the smirk evident in his tone.

I turned around and laughed. "That was insane" I said, holding a hand up to my mouth.

He grinned a crooked grin before walking closer to me. He caressed my right cheek. "And yes, sometimes it's better as a wolf" he said, his thumb ghosting over my bottom lip.

My breath caught. "I think your cuter as a wolf" I said without thinking.

His grin widened. "But you think I'm cute?" He asked as his face tilted down.

I couldn't seem to get enough air before our lips touched gently. He didn't coax me or force him, he simply gave me the reigns. I couldn't help but kiss him back.

It was okay to love two people, right?

His left hand buried itself into my hair as the other stayed on my cheek. He was holding me there and I really wasn't looking for an excuse to leave.
But Marcus....

I broke away, and he let me. "I'm sorry" I said, touching my lips with my fingers.

Austin closed his eyes briefly as if he was in pain before looking at me steadily. "It's okay" he said softly.

I pulled back out of his arms. "I should go" I said, glancing at him one last time before running back down the hill.

Austin turned to stare out over the Ireland grassy hills, his mind whirling.
He could feel the connection with her and he'd hoped she could feel it too.

He might not be an alpha anymore. But he sure as well won't lose his mate to a vampire either.

A/N

WHAT

Diana is Austin's mate?
Who saw that coming?

Plus a little Austin and Diana action.
Like I love Marcus and Diana (Diarcus? Marana? Idk) but there's a special place in my heart for Austin and Diana.

Which sucks cause it means I have to choose a side.
But Marcus
But Austin..
I love them both!

Anyway,  what did you think of the chapter?
Did ya see it coming?

Oh and Austin as a wolf is so cute!
