CHAPTER FIVE:

“MOM! I GOING TO ‘THE MARKET’” I yell to Mom.

‘The Market’ is our code name for ‘I’m going hunting’ when Haymitch is around. I go and change into hunting clothes, and jump out my window. I surprisingly fall on my feet, not my face or arm this time. I trot quickly out to the Meadow. The place where Mom finally starts to relax. And me, too. I find the hiding place for the bow and arrows, and start to venture out to our hunting place. It’s a high hill near a flowing river. When I make it to the top, thinking on what to do, I hear a rustle. I string my bow, aimed to where the sound generally came from. I can make out two figures, a tall one, and a short one. Humans. I can make out what they look like, too. I recognize the taller one. From one of Mom’s pictures.

“Katniss?” the tall figure asks.

“Um… I’m not Katniss,” I reply. Undoubtedly, it’s Gale Hawthorne. The seam boy who my mother almost ran away into the woods with the morning she got reaped. And now he and his son, probably, are going to kill me.
