EVERY MOVEMENT SHE MADE WAS SLOPPY Jason noticed. From the moment she fell into the man's lap, the moment she ran her hand up his arm, to the moment she brought the drink to her lips. He knew it was fake, acting intoxicated to lower her victims guard. Jason was on in his feet in an instant, slamming his hands into the wood and leaping over the table when Athena's eyes glossed over. She took a step forward but her leg twisted. He yelled at her, bellowed her name over the deafening music of the bar but either she didn't hear him or she was just blatantly ignoring him, it was too late anyway. He didn't know what he was doing. He was already half way to her before her glass had even hit the ground.

The glass shattered in a sound louder than the commotion around him, sharp enough to pierce his ears. And Jason froze. His blood running cold as she collapsed onto the floor with an ugly thud. His heart quickened, violently throwing itself against his rib cage time and time again, forcing his body to fall forward. He has to run faster. Go faster. Faster. Faster.

Faster

The air disappeared from his lungs, a hand reaching down his throat and crushing it until he was left puffing, doubled over Athena's unconscious body.

Her eyes had rolled back into her head.

Her pulse was weak. So incredibly weak.

The colour had drained from her face.

Her hair too dark against her pale skin.

And he was out of breath.

What the fuck? He shouldn't be out of breath. He was mere meters away. How is he out of breath? He can't be out of breath. That's ridiculous, there's no way he could be—

         Athena stirred under him.

And Jason released a sigh he hadn't even realised he'd been holding. He closed his eyes and bent his head forward, the rise and fall of his chest slowing down to a familiar rhythm. She's okay.

Athena must have opened her eyes and seen the man above her as the next thing he knew, she had scrambled to her feet and was brushing the non-existent dust off her pants and straightening her shirt.

Jason followed suit, scolding himself the entire way until he stood shoulder to shoulder with her. "What the fuck, Athena?" The words were harsh. No one had noticed Athena's fall. Either they were too busy laughing, too busy indulged in their own pathetic selves or that this happened around here so often that no one had bothered to think twice about it. He had a feeling it was more the later than the former. He did his best to normalise his breathing as quickly as possible before Athena could notice. "You know you should not have drank that."
