Flames and Fire

She was a little rebel,
Burning bridges where she went
Throwing matches on the ground
Until all her flames were spent
She danced upon the rooftops
As the flames still climbed higher
A shadow in the smoke,
Engulfed within the fire
She was enthralled
By the fire and the flames
A spitfire, herself
That could never be tamed
She flickered in the darkness,
A tiny, living light
Hope within the shadows
Spreading joy throughout the night

This poem was inspired by a story I once read, called 'It's a sin to light a candle in the dark'.
It's about oppression and poverty, how hope was exstinguised and people lived in a figurative darkness during the Apartheid years in South Africa.
