---New City, Same Weight
I still couldn’t believe I was in Atlanta. Like yeah, I didn’t wanna be down here to begin with—but I couldn’t lie, the city was fine as hell. Trees everywhere, skyline like a painting, and the air? Different. Even the airport felt like a movie set.
But once the plane touched down, I knew... there was no turning back.
I grabbed my duffle, took a breath, and stepped off with the rest of the crowd. It was like the final walk into a whole new chapter I didn’t even get to write.
And there she was—Madison. My dad’s second wife. She looked just like her pictures, all pretty and polite, standing there like she ain’t know what to say. From what I heard, Zeus’s mom took her own life and Charles married Madison just six months after. Wild, right?
I walked up slow, adjusted my bag on my shoulder. “Hey,” I said, real low.
Her face softened like I caught her off guard. “Hi,” she smiled nervously. “You can call me Maddie… or Madison. Whatever feels right to you.”
I smiled back and held out my hand. “It’s nice to finally meet you.”
She looked kinda shocked, but shook my hand with both of hers like she appreciated it more than I knew. After that little intro moment, we headed out the airport and toward the car.
Now listen... I thought Atlanta was beautiful from the sky—but from the ground? It was something else. Green, warm, alive. Even the air smelled like possibility.
As we pulled off, Maddie cleared her throat like she was nervous again. “I know you probably expected your father to come, but he had to go pick up your brother from Atlanta State Penitentiary. They’ll meet us at the house.”
My eyebrow twitched. “Oh… does he work there or something? Like... internship?”
She blinked, then shook her head slowly. “Um… no. He just finished his time there.”
I turned my head real slow. “Finished his time?”
“Yeah… Zeus was in prison for two years,” she said carefully. “But… you knew that, right?”
I looked out the window. “No. I haven’t really spoken to Charles since I was like... twelve. He sent postcards. Checks. That’s about it.”
After that, it was quiet. Uncomfortable quiet. The kind where you can hear people thinking.
When we finally pulled up to the house, I stepped out and went to grab my bags, but Maddie beat me to it.
“I got them—go check out your new space,” she said quickly.
I wanted to argue, bad. The old me would’ve snapped back just to feel in control. But I remembered what Auntie Ella told me before I left. Try.
So I let it go.
The house? Nice as hell. Modern, open, smelled like fresh paint and eucalyptus. Maddie gave me the tour as we walked in.
“Technically, it’s two houses in one,” she explained. “Your father and I agreed that you and Zeus would have the entire second floor to yourselves. Before he got locked up, he was barely ever here anyway, so it shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Oh wow… y’all didn’t have to do that,” I said, honestly kinda impressed.
“It’s fine, really,” she chuckled. “Plus, I’m scared of heights.”
I smiled, taking it all in. “Thank you for welcoming me. It’s really beautiful.”
She looked at me with that warm, mom-energy smile. “Oh, sweetie. This is your home too.”
I nodded, and was halfway up the stairs when she called my name.
“Yes, ma’am?”
She shifted her stance, a little unsure. “I know this is a lot. And I don’t ever want you to feel like I’m trying to replace your mom. But if you ever need anything… anything at all—I’m here.”
I stood there for a second. Swallowed that lump in my throat. “Thank you, Ms. Madison. I know what my mom and Charles had was over long before he left. I just wish he didn’t leave the way he did.”
She gave me a knowing nod. That moment hit. And after it passed, I finished climbing the stairs.
When I say this upstairs felt like its own house? I’m talkin’ full living room, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and—pause—a whole dance studio? With a pole in the middle?
Okayyy then.
I tossed my jacket off and pulled out my phone, opening up my music app. Picked one of my fave tracks and walked into the studio.
The beat dropped—and I lost myself. Spinning, swaying, sliding down the pole with the music riding my hips. It felt good to just move, no eyes, no judgment, just me in my element.
But I didn’t realize I wasn’t alone until I spun around—and froze.
Tall, light skin, full of shadows.
He was just standing there, leaning in the doorway watching me. Almost made me fall off the damn pole. I caught myself, barely, landing on my feet like I meant to do it.
“Um… hi,” I breathed out, grabbing my phone off the floor. “Sorry—I didn’t mean to intrude. You got a nice studio up here.”
I walked over and held my hand out.
“I’m Ghenesis. You must be Zeus. It’s nice to meet you.”
He didn’t shake my hand. Didn’t smile. Just looked me dead in the face with these cold-ass gray eyes like he was reading every part of me and not liking what he saw.
He was tall as hell—had to be at least 6'3"—and covered in tattoos. Arms, neck, even a couple crawling up toward his jaw. Freckles scattered across his face like they were placed there on purpose. Crazy thing was, we didn’t look a thing alike except for one thing—our eyes. Both colored. But even that felt like two different galaxies.
“Um, Ms. Maddie said we were sharing the second floor, but if you’re not cool wi—”
“Your bags are in your room.”
His voice?
Deep.
Like smooth bass with attitude. It hit my chest before my ears even processed it.“Oh… okay. Thank—”
SLAM.He walked off and disappeared into his room, door closing like a period at the end of a sentence.
I blinked.
“…Yeah. You too, big bro.”
