Sunday Morning

SLAP!

The sound cracked through the room like a gunshot. I flinched hard, body stiffenin’ as I watched Charles smack Zeus dead across the face.

We had just got back from Nevada and hadn’t even been in the house five minutes. Charles was already waitin’ on us in the living room like a mob boss with a grudge. Zeus told me he wasn’t gon’ sugarcoat nothin’—he was gon’ tell him straight up that we shut down the job.

And this... was how he reacted.

“SHUT DOWN? The fuck you mean shut down? Did I give you permission to do that?!” Charles barked, standin’ over Zeus like he ain’t just hit him.

Zeus sat in the loveseat, calm, jaw tight, tryin’ hard not to snap. I sat across from him on the couch, feelin’ like I was witnessin’ a war I couldn’t step into. I saw that storm behind Zeus’s eyes. He was pissed. But he kept it locked.

“Like I said,” Zeus said slowly, low and steady, “we wasn’t prepared. New info came through. I called it off. That’s on me.”

“You don’t stop shit unless I say so.”
SLAP!

Another hit. Zeus’s head turned slightly, but his expression didn’t move.

“Do we have an understanding?” Charles growled.

Zeus looked up at him with the same deadpan stare. “Yes, sir.”

Charles turned to me. I dropped my head instantly, not wantin’ that man’s eyes on me for too long. His presence alone felt like poison.

“We’ll be attendin’ a service event at the Country Club this mornin’. I expect you to dress appropriately,” he snapped. “We leave in two hours... I have disappointments for sons.”

He walked off into his study, door slammin’ behind him.

I looked up, and Zeus was already lookin’ at me. He tilted his head toward the stairs. Say less.

I stood up and headed upstairs with him right behind me. But before I could dip into my room, he pulled me into his instead—arms already around my waist, door clickin’ shut behind us.

“You good?” I asked, turnin’ in his arms to look at the side of his face. His cheek was already puffin’ up, gettin’ red and purple.
