The next afternoon

"Appreciate y’all for rollin' with me," I said, glancing back at Erin and Tay as we stepped into the clinic

"Appreciate y’all for rollin' with me," I said, glancing back at Erin and Tay as we stepped into the clinic.
"Girl, you good. Hell, I need to make an appointment my damn self," Tay replied, her hoops swinging as she popped her gum.
"Gigi would've come, but you know how he is—shit like this makes his stomach flip," Erin chuckled, clutching her iced coffee.

This was just a routine monthly checkup, something I had to knock out before my flight tomorrow. 3 a.m. sharp. My stomach flipped at the thought. Whole time, I’d been duckin’ Zeus like he was the Feds. Couldn’t deal. Not after that conversation.

I needed air. Space. A moment to think without his name weighing on my chest like cinderblocks. He tried not to spaz, I’ll give him that, but I knew him. That temper was right under the surface, twitchin’. I let it slide yesterday. But now? I had to figure out how to let him down gently before all hell broke loose.

We walked up to the receptionist desk.
"Hi, I got a nine o'clock with Dr. Robbins," I said, smiling politely.
She looked up, typing quick. “Genesis Santiago?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Alright, take a seat. He’ll be with you in a moment.”

We made our way to the waiting area. I slid into one of the chairs and immediately pulled out my phone, tapping into my Tarven game—just enough to keep my mind from spiraling. Then, of course…

Incoming Call: Zeus 😤

Declined.
Boy, not today.

"You just declined Zeus call?" Erin raised a brow, clocking it.
“Yeah…he just… be doin’ too much sometimes.” I sighed.
"Real talk, I ain’t never seen your brother act that way with nobody else," she added, sipping slow.
“Like what?” I asked, eyes still glued to my screen.

“Like you his damn wife or something. Real possessive."
Tay chimed in, "Could just be that twin thing. Y’all are born at the same time.”

Yeah… if only it was that simple.

“Hold up, look,” Tay whispered, nodding toward the hallway.

We all looked up. Kendra—hair disheveled, eyeliner smudged—was walking out with a doctor, lookin' like the weight of the world just collapsed on her chest.

"She must’ve caught somethin’ she can’t get rid of," Erin muttered.
"Erin, chill… she looks really sad," I mumbled.
"Man, fuck that girl. She could trip and fall off a curb today and I’d clap," Tay said, stone cold.

We ducked our heads as they passed. Last place I wanted drama? A damn clinic.

"Kendra… this your third insemination attempt," the doctor said gently. "I’m concerned your body won’t sustain another cycle."

Insemination? My ears perked.

"The hell she need IVF for?" Tay whispered.
"Girl, hush, that ain’t our business," I whispered back.

Kendra’s voice cracked. "No… this has to work. It’s the only way I can get him back. I love him."

Scorpio popped up instantly.
"Oh nah. That don’t sound suspicious to y’all?"

It’s none of our business, Ghenesis, I told myself. But my chest said otherwise.

"I’ll call your father once the test results come in," the doctor added before walking off.
He muttered under his breath, "Out of all the men in Atlanta… why Zeus Hawkins?"

See? Now I’m nosy.

Fifteen Minutes Later

"I can’t believe I’m doin’ this," I hissed under my breath as the three of us slipped past the front desk, creeping down the hallway like we were in a Netflix heist movie.

We peeked into a room where the same doctor and nurse from earlier were cleaning up.
“Don’t toss that—under Mr. Dalton’s orders,” the doctor said, carefully taking a cup of white liquid like it was radioactive.

Is that—?
“Wait… is that what I think it is?” Tay whispered.

"That’s Zeus’s semen… what the actual fuck," Erin cackled, trying to hold it in.
I couldn’t even laugh. I was stuck, frozen, eyes locked on that fridge like it was glowing.

The nurse placed the cup inside, then both exited through the opposite door.

“Okay, now or never,” Tay whispered.
We rushed inside. I yanked the fridge open and—boom. There it was. Name labeled bold: SPEC: 54876...Z.HAWKINS.

“Ain’t no way this real,” I muttered.
“How you think she got it? They been fuckin’,” Tay said like it was obvious.

I rolled my eyes and grabbed the cup, ready to dip when—

The door swung open.

“Oh, perfect! You’re here,” said another doctor, walking in with a chart. “Never mind, Stacy—I found my 9:45!” he called out.

I blinked. "Uh…what?"

He turned to me, cheerful. “Hi! I’m Dr. Langston. I’ll be handling your insemination today. And I see you brought your support team. That’s great.”

My what?

Erin elbowed me. I panicked.

"Yep, uh… I’m here for that," I laughed nervously, trying not to pass out.
"Awesome. Go ahead and get undressed, put on the gown, and I’ll take that from you," he said, taking the cup and walking out.

"Girl, what the hell just happened?" Erin hissed.
“We gotta go!” she added.
“I can’t leave without it,” I whispered.
Tay stared at me. “You heard the doctor. Kendra probably won’t even get pregnant. We could be saving Zeus from a whole trap.”

I bit my lip. My hands were trembling.

This ain’t your fight, Ghen. Just walk out.

But what if… this is our second chance?

"Ghen… you good?" Tay asked, soft this time.

I looked at them. Then down at the gown. My throat was dry. My heart beat was sprinting.

"...Help me get undressed." I said quietly. "Please."

They paused. Looked at each other. Then at me.

No more questions. Just help. They started undoing my jacket, handing me the gown.

I slipped it on, staring at the ceiling like it had answers. My voice cracked, barely above a whisper.

"What the fuck am I doing?"
