Later that day...
"Aight, that should be the last of it," I exhaled, dropping down onto the edge of the bed. "Damn, I'm surprised all my stuff got here early."
I stood up and gave the room one last look-walls decked out just how I imagined, LED lights glowing soft lavender and teal, crystals laid across the window ledge, incense still burning from earlier.
I hit the switch to cut the main light off.
Okay bitch, you did that.
I smiled to myself, a proud lil moment in all this madness.
Backpack still halfway unzipped, I started pulling out smaller stuff for my nightstand-chargers, lip balm, my satin bonnet... Then I froze.
Two photos slid out, old and perfect, with a sticky note folded over the corner.
"Thought you'd like some company down there.
These were the last two pictures she took before the cancer fully took over."
- Aunt EllieMy breath caught in my throat.
I held the photos to my chest as tears spilled over. My fingers brushed the images like they were glass-fragile, sacred.
My mama.
My best friend.
Her skin glowed even in print, smile soft, eyes full of quiet fire. She was the best photographer in D.C. Agencies used to beg for her. She worked magic from behind the lens and in front of it. She was a whole muse. And now all I had were memories... and these pictures.
Knock knock knock.
"Ghenesis? It's Maddy. Can I come in?"
I sniffled, wiped my face quick. "Yeah, you can come in."
She stepped in slow, taking in the vibe of the room. "Oh my... It's beautiful in here. Has a dreamy kind of energy."
I smiled weakly. "That's what I was going for."
Her eyes landed on the photos, and she moved closer. "Is this your mom?"
I nodded, still holding onto them. "Yeah. Last ones she took before... it got worse."
"She was stunning," Maddie said, her voice soft. "I see where you get your glow from. She radiated."
I didn't trust my voice not to crack, so I just nodded again.
"I came to let you know dinner's ready. Your father's here... I hope steak's okay?"
"That's fine," I said quietly. "I'll be down in a minute."
She gave me a gentle smile and closed the door behind her.
I stood there for a second, gave myself a quick pep talk in the mirror.
You got this. Just eat, nod, be polite. Then back to your room.
I opened the door-and ran straight into a brick wall.
"Oh shit, my bad-" I stepped back, realizing I'd just bumped into Zeus's chest.
Nothing. Not even a grunt.
