Title Translation: 'Butterfly'

Like himself, no one had expected the always calm, collected man to raise his hand on someone, moreover on his own son-in-law, correction, temporary son-in-law. While everyone was focused on Garima's words, they didn't notice the struggling old man trying to get up and with their head bowed in shame and guilt, he managed to take the 3 steps towards his target unnoticed, but it seemed unlikely that anyone would stop him because he only acted out what everyone felt like doing in their hearts.

It wasn't the slap but the reason for it that hurt Arnav Singh Raizada. With his healing hand even though Shashi managed to get an imprint of his fingers on the man's face, nothing compared to the pain inside him. He tried to support his father-in-law's trembling body, but his hold was shaken off immediately and he felt the old man trying to push him and staggering back due to his weakness.

Akash instantly reached out and caught Shashi, and held him back as he attempted to hit his daughter's culprit again. Failing to break free from Akash's hold, the old man let his tears free at his helplessness and failure to safeguard his daughter.

Seeing him break down, not one eye was dry in the entire room but one. The two families could'nt hold back their tears as they thought of everything the young girl had to go through. Her every tear that they had ignored, every single plead to look at her when they were angry, every request of forgiveness came back to haunt them.

But Arnav Singh Raizada was'nt able to cry, he wasn't able to shed a single tear seeing his family mourning the pain of thier daughter that he was the reason for. But this time it wasn't because he was confused or unaffected, but because he seemed to have forgotten how. Even his own body refused to let him cry out some of the pain. He himself held all the pain in his heart, leting it bleed.

Madhumti marched up to Arnav and held his collar.

" Kaahe kiye tum ee sab? Jis din se tum humri titalya se mille ho, uss din se uska jaan ke peechhe hi paddh gaye ho. Kabhi taane, kabhi auphis, har pal bas uska zindagi bigaadne mein lage rahat ho. Par hum phir bhi tumka maaf kartein rahe soch kar ki humaar natkhat sankadevi tumka bhi parehan karat rahi hogi, magar oo ne aisa kaa kar diya tha ki tum uska barbad hi kar diye. Jaanat hai ki tum tuhar bahin se bahut pyaar karte ho, bhai hone ke khatir uska raksha karan ka vaada liye ho, par kabhi tumhare dimaag men ee nahi aaya ki humaari titalya bhi kissi ki bahin rahi. Uski Jiji ne bhi vaada liya tha apni bahin ko bachane ka, apna vaada nibhate huye tumka ee yaad nahi ayaa ki tum oo vaade ka mazaak udaavat rahe. Soch kaisan liya tumne ki humri titalya kissi ka ghar todegi?"

(Why did you do this? Since the day you've met my Butterfly(nickname of Khushi), since that day you're behind her. Sometimes taunts, sometimes office, every moment you were spoiling her life. I still forgave you thinking that my naughty Mad Girl( nickname of Khushi) must be troubling you a lot, but what did she do that you literally destroyed her? I know that you love your sister a lot, being her brother, you've taken the promise to safegurd he, but did it never occur to your brain that my Butterfly was also someones sister. Her sister also took an oath to protect her sister, but in fullfilling your own promise you could'nt remember that you're making a joke of that promise. How could you think that my Butterfly would break someones house?)

Madhumati spat the words at him, pointing at a weeping Payal in the middle. She was breathing harshly as she finished repeating the question again and again as she hit his chest.

"Kaisan soch liye tum?"

(How could you think of such a thing?)

"Kaisan soch liye tum?"

(How could you think of such a thing?)

"Kaisan soch liye tum?"

(How could you think of such a thing?)

The shouting started having an affect on her and Garima, Payal and Manoramma were beside her in a moment holding her back. Payal brought a glass of water and begged her to drink it but she continued asking the same question.

Madhumati Mishra was a pretty ordinary middle class girl until she was widowed. She was merely a 23 year old young woman, forced into a white saree left alone in the small house in a crowded area after a few days of mourning and consolation at the accident of her husband and the miscarraige that followed. Shashi had wanted to stay with his sister, but she refused asking him to leave and not cancel his approching marraige with Garima. What he did'nt know was that it was their strct orthodox mother who had asked the sweet simple Madhumati to stay away from her brother and not cast her cursed shadow on her brother's life.

Needless to say the struggle of maintaining the house and a tailoring job alone in the crowded streets of the capital had toughened up the young girl. Two years later, the news of the birth of her niece had been like a ray of light in her dark life, but her mother had refused to let her even see the baby. It was then that she developed an animosity for Garimas older sister Amrita who had been given the privellage to name the child which was supposed to be her own right. This turned into a deep hostility when three years later Amrita named her child 'Khushi', a name her husband had been contemplating for thier own child. Five years later when she was finally allowed in her brothers life after her mothers death, the contempt only grew seeing the bond between her brother and his sister-in-law's family. Khushi's father Jagat Dayal was also in the Hotel business and thus shared a good rapport with Shashi over thier connected areas of work and their house around 30 minutes away from Shashi's was also an added advantage to the freindship between the families. They were so close that Payal refered to Amrita as 'Amrita Amma' and Jagat as 'Jagat Babuji' while Khushi called Garima and Shashi ' Garima Amma' and 'Shashi babuji' respectively and the cousins were very close as well, a fact that Madhumati found hard to digest thinking of how it shoud have been her family. It was this feeling of contempt that Khuhsi had often payed the price for when she was adopted into Shashi's family three years later. Madhumati wasn't a bad person, but time and situations had forced her to build walls aound herself. While she still considered Payal as her source of brightness, she often taunted Khushi because of the unconscious feelings of dislike for the girl's parents. But on some rare occations, she had felt a certain fondness for the cheerful carefree girl who reminded her of herself before life threw tragedy her way and now seeing the man in front of her who was trying to steal her butterfly's spirit enraged her, more so because of her own guilt.

She drank the water Payal brought, accusations still visible in her eyes when an unexpected voice offered her the answers she was seeking.

"Because Arnav Singh Raizada is God."
