It had taken me a few days to forgive myself for nearly killing my dad. Mum did her best to make me feel better which I appreciated. Boris was having terrible times as the castle kept him trapped. He was making slow progress as he managed to get to the front door today. He was determined to run away & would keep trying. Mum felt bad for him as the transformation was nearing. However, she couldn't do much besides attempt to console him. Boris was going to try to run away again tonight. I was just going to sleep off another failure.

"Ugh, this better be good Zoltan." I groggily answered as I turned on my lamp & took the letter

"A note from Master Boris. He specifically requested you wait until ..." Zoltan explained before I cut him off

"Dear Vlad by the time you read this, I'll be gone. Blah, blah, blah 16th birthday. Blah, blah, blah, transformation. I'm running away. Sorry, Boris." I read before tossing the note away & going back to sleep

"But, aren't you going to try to stop him, master Vlad?" Zoltan asked utterly confused

"No need. He won't get far." I replied before snuggling into the blankets

Boris came back the next morning as I thought. I was munching on some cereal as he came in looking defeated. I asked him how far he got which was the front gate. I congratulated him to try to lighten the mood. He still pouted as his birthday was tomorrow. I brought out my makeshift plan & told the mirror switching details. Boris huffed in defeat after hearing my well-intentioned but rubbish plan.

" I wouldn't be so sure." Dad joked as he & Uncle Ivan ganged up on Boris. I quickly hid my plans to avoid getting yelled at.

"Darling, let the poor boy enjoy his pre-transformation time." Mum chastised as she came to greet me

"It was just some harmless fun. It's very important to me to bond with my dear nephew." Dad lied as mum rolled her eyes

"Yes, because everything you do is out of the kindness of your heart." Mum sarcastically replied before prying Boris out of their grasp & giving Dad a quick kiss

"Nice distraction but the boy needs to face the reality of his new life." Dad argued as Boris & I watched from the table

"Yes, of course, but a few hours for himself won't hurt. You'll have a lifetime to tutor him." Mum sternly replied

"A few hours & no more. We can't keep delaying the inevitable." Dad huffed before they flew away. Renfield's screams echoed & helped locate them.

"Thanks for the delay, Aunt Maria. You're the best." Borris thanked her with a tight hug

"I only wish that I could do more. But, I'm glad that you appreciate it." Mum replied as she returned the hug, "You boys have fun while I do some work."

Mum went to do her work while Boris & I enjoyed the day. Boris was happy being a normal teenager. With his asthma, we couldn't anything too straining. I still had fun being normal with someone though. Besides Robin, I didn't have many opportunities to be a normal kid. It was great having someone else like me. We got called back around 14:00. Everyone was dressed in their best capes which made me suspicious.

"Happy Birthday my son! Let me show you your big present." Uncle Ivan grinned as he & dad flanked Boris

"Only the best present for a special day." Dad added as Mum watched nervously

"Really?! Thank you. Where is it?" Boris eagerly asked before being blindfolded.

The rest of us followed them to a weird corridor in the castle. We stopped at two Knights flanked something wrapped in red paper & a black bow. The faint shadow of an archway could be slightly seen. Finally, Boris had the blindfold removed.
